M83 has been hard at work recording a double album with some help from Zola Jesus. The first of this made its way on the internets this week – AND HOLY COW IS IT AMAZING.
Listened to this track at least 20 times yesterday. Already on my 4th listen this morning alone.
I cannot wait to get this album. Listen to “Intro” below and stream “Midnight City”
Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is out on October 17th via Naive.
2011 has been quite the journey for the ambient folk songstress Steph Thompson – who performs under the name Steffaloo. So far this year Steffaloo played her first live show ever, released a collection of early demos entitled “Meet Me In Montauk, and has been featured in an avalanche of collaborations alongside Chrome Sparks,Blackbird Blackbird, Germany Germany, and Sun Glitters that have spread like wildfire across the web.
Steffaloo’s debut 7 inch “On Fire” is available this week on our very own JAXART Records. Listen to “On Fire” and “The Red Runs Free” feat. Pandit below.
Steffaloo also plans to hit the road this fall including an appearance at the CMJ Music Marathon performing with Chrome Sparks and will be performing live at the Goldrush Festival in Denver, CO Sept. 16th and 17th w/ Tennis, How To Dress Well, Candy Claws, Teen Daze, Galapagos, and more.
Like you needed anymore proof that chicks rock. You can now listen to the all female super group Wild Flag’s new album in its entirety over at NPR. The group features Carrie Brownstein and Sleater-Kinney bandmate Janet Weiss, Helium’s Mary Timony, and The Minders’ Rebecca Cole.
I didn’t watch the VMAs so I only the highlights from the show I’ve seen in tweets and via tumblr feeds. This is what the internet is telling me went down
- Beyonce is one damn good looking pregnant lady
- Lady Gaga dressed up like Doogie’s Howsers best friend Vinnie
- Chris Brown can fly.
MTV premiered a new track by Wavves last night off his upcoming Life Sux EP that will be released September 20th on his own imprint - Ghost Ramp. The EP features collabs with Best Coast and future tour mates Fucked Up. Download the new track above!
Sleeping Bags is a shoegazey side project from Matt and Jesse Kivel of Princeton. Yesterday Stereogum posted an instrumental track entitled “Pehr.” Los Angeles music geeks know doubt will recognize what the track is in reference to. There are definitely some Explosions In The Sky worthy moments on this offering.
Sleeping Bags’ debut LP is out Sept 13th on their own Easter Everywhere label.
The band’s follow up features all the energy from their first release but adds in a swath of beautiful melodies and some damn catchy moments. This album sounds a little more polished than the first which will no doubt lead some lo-fi purists to make comment but honestly I think it sounds tremendous without losing its bite.
The songstress aka St. Vincent unveiled a new video today for “Cruel” which comes off her forthcoming release Strange Mercy out Sept 13th on 4AD. Read about the shoot at Huffington Post.
Download “Surgeon” off the album in exchange for your email address here.

SUNSET JUNCTION ARTISTS ON THE MOVE
- HANDS – Fri. Aug 26th, 2011 – Mezzanine at The Alexandria Hotel – Details
It’s been nearly a year since I first discovered ”Pure Ecstacy” by Speculator - a warbling track layered in fuzzed out analog glory. The sound he creates reminds me of watching music videos on recorded VHS tapes that are close to the end of their life.
Speculator is a project of former Angeleno Nick Ray – who recently relocated to the Bay Area. Most people know Nick as a renaissance artist with an insane capacity for taking music and formats from the past and evolving them for the mix media generation. It’s creating tracks that evoke instant nostalgia where Ray excels. Think of it as the perfect soundtrack for a lost generation of millenials born between 1981-1991.

Today we throw it back to a recent obsession of mine – CANDY CLAWS. Their glowing cinematic sophmore album Hidden Lands (buy it here) recieved a ton of well deserved praise from the likes of Pitchfork and NPR. Since then they have continued to work on worthwhile projects including their “Candy Claws In Dreamland” video series w/ accompanying soundtrack. What I love most about Candy Claws is they still maintain the title of being perhaps the most genuine and NICEST band I have ever come into contact with.
Hell, During their performance at our SXSW showcase with twosyllable I watched Chris Walla from Death Cab For Cutie sit awestruck during their performance only glancing down occasionally to tweet about how magical the project was.
Candy Claws return to Los Angeles next week and will be headlining a show at the Echo. Moses Campbell, RACES, and Masxs will also perform. Purchase advance tickets here or from Origami Vinyl in Echo Park. Details Below!
