Sorry for the radio silence last week. CMJ 2011 kind of took over and didnt leave much time for blogging. This week I thought I would share with you some of the best performances I managed to catch during the festival. I will be unveiling new picks all week long.
Location: Knitting Factory 10.21 – Distiller Promo Party
My friend Dan at Distiller told me I absolutely had to check them out live – Boy was he right. Yellow Ostrich utilizes looping pedals, african inspired drums, and a unique vocal style to create a boisterous yet lush atmosphere. The band played tracks off their debut full length The Mistress + a few new songs which wound up being my favorite part of their set.
Further cementing by adoration of this project is the amazing cover of my favorite song by Sharon Van Etten “Love More” which can be downloaded below.
Yellow Ostrich will play LA Nov 10th supporting Ra Ra Riot at The El Rey Theater.
Los Angeles’ own RACES are midway through a slew of CMJ appearances this week. Today the band played Brooklyn Vegan‘s free day event at Public Assembly in alongside Bleached, Chelsea Wolfe, J Mascis and more. BV also premiered a new remix of their track “Big Broom” by Sun Glitters on their site today. Download below. Races will release a new EP Nov. 15th on Frenchkiss Records.
Monday – getting ready for CMJ tomorrow. Here’s a quickie from one of the acts I feel you should check out while your in New York. Hoping to have a full guide for you tonight.
Bleached is the new project of former Mika Miko members and siblings Jessie and Jennifer Clavin. Sun soaked songs short and sweet with so much sacchrine flavor they bleed Nutella. Quarter if you can quote where I got that reference from.
Pitchfork premiered PAPA’s video for “I Am The Lion King today. Yes, I am aware that I seriously need to stop gushing on this PAPA EP. People are starting to get the wrong idea. It’s really simple peeps – SHIT IS GOOD. You need to give it a test drive.
Empire Of The Sun certainly know a thing or two about putting on a spectacle. Their stage show is filled with pagentry, style, dancers, glitter, lights, and more. Watch the video below to see what I mean. This could all come across as being too indulgent but when you pair it with their sacchrine crusted electro tunes it all makes total sense. It’s a guilty pleasure that you crave to get lost in.
I certainly don’t want anyone of you to miss their amazing over-the-top stage show which is coming to LA this Sunday October 16th at The Nokia Theater. So much so that Rock Insider is giving away 3 pairs of tickets to see the show this weekend!
Promo vid for the show below. Go to Nokia Inside Track’s facebook page where you can catch pre and post event content including exclusive MP3s and video.
A few friends have sent me this track recently so I figured it’s about time I finally shared. No is a project of Bradley Hanan Carter. The native of New Zeland is now based right in my backyard – Echo Park. His deep baritone vocals and strong prescence has drawm comparison to the likes of Matt Berninger from The National. No will release a debut EP Don’t Worry You’ll Be Hear Forever on November 11th. I have a strong feeling you’ll be hearing much more about it. A track this good doesn’t come around very often.
Well this seriously made my morning. Head over to Urban Outfitters where you can stream M83‘s glorious new album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming in its entirety as well as read an interesting interview with Anthony Gonzalez himself.
I kind of really love this bombastic remix of Givers track “Meantime” created by Greg Saunier of Deerhoof. Lot of big thundering drums and it’s just… well… deliciously weird.
Are you on Hype Machine? I’m kind of seriously obsessed with it. You can subscribe to all your favorite blog feeds and then play it like a radio station. If Hype Machine had been around in the late 90s I probably would have lost my virginity to it.
When Moon Bounce and Steffaloo get together you know its going to be nothing short of magic. You seriously must listen to this glitched out high energy gem.
Don’t forget to pick up Steffaloo’s debut 7 inch “On Fire” in our JAXART store. These two releases couldn’t be more night and day different.
The world has lost of true visionary. There is not one of us who has not been affected by computer revolution he helped to build. You truly changed the world forever.
Congrats go out to Nite Jewel – who recently signed to Secretly Canadian. Check out her new single “She’s Always Watching You” which will be available on 7 Inch vinyl via Yours Truly‘s label Love Letters Ink. It also includes a hand written note from Nite Jewel’s Ramona Gonzalez.
PAPA’s amazing new EP officially came out yesterday on Hit City U.S.A. and Psychedlic Judaism. The band are currently out on tour with Girls but will celebrate their EP Release next Wednesday Oct. 12th at The Bootleg. I think I’ve said this numerous times before especially via Twitter – YOU NEED THIS.
