Sutja Gutiérrez Original Soundtrack

So much amazing music coming out of Spain these days. Sutja Gutiérrez‘s album simply titled Sutja Gutiérrez Original Soundtrack entered my ipod about a week ago and hasnt left. Sutja is primarily known as a lo-fi artist and his creations are minimal masterpieces. Best part is most of these gems are available for FREE right here.

jenny o – Well OK Honey

I positively fell in love with jenny o. the first time I heard her cozy and intimate voice on her debut EP HOME. Jenny’s laid back sunny tunes draw influence from greats of the past such as Harry Nilsson, Beach Boys, and The Beatles. Still, it’s her sweet voice that balances the old and the new providing a sense of urgency and passion to her music that I find so exhilarating.

It is rare to find such a humble talent here in Los Angeles and jenny o. is totally the real deal. We hope she goes far and with pipes like she has it’s only a matter of time.

Jenny O’s Home EP
will be re-released on Manimal Vinyl in March.

If you live in Los Angeles we highly recommend you catch one of her free residency nights at the Bootleg Theater every Monday in February. Special guests include Everest, The Bell Brigade, J. Tillman, and Rock Insider mega fav Leslie Stevens. By special request: I would DIE to see Jenny and Leslie do a duet!!!

Dates and music video for “Well OK Honey” can be found below!

The Black Ryder – Gone Without Feeling

Is it just me or is shoegaze on its way back in to musical fashion? Did it ever really leave? I must say this track by The Black Ryder is certainly a fine audio aid for that borderline shoegaze/brit pop generation that spawned acts like Oasis, Blur, BRMC, and The Raveonettes. “Gone Without Feeling” is a pretty damn sexy track. Their dual male/female vocals are enveloped by a thick blanket of Ride worthy fuzz.

The Black Ryder‘s album Buy The Ticket Take The Ride is available now on Mexican Summer.

Weekend – Sports

I had the pleasure of seeing Weekend at Part Time Punks a week ago. Their set seriously blew my mind. Their set was fully charged with a wall of sound generated not by your typical guitars but in fact by their bassist and lead vocalist. Weekend’s new album Sports would do Jesus and Mary Chain proud and they have the live show to boot. Pick up the album out now on Slumberland.

Fleet Foxes- Helplessness Blues (New Song + New Album!)

Well this makes for a good Monday! Fleet Foxes announced today that they will have a new album “Helplessness Blues” out May 3rd and have even offered the title track from the album up for free download. IT’S SOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD. Download the track below.

The band will also tour in May including a date at the Hollywood Palladium. I would have way rather seen them play somewhere like The Orpheum or The Greek.

Video: Blackbird Blackbird – Pure

It’s Friday and I just got back from a 3 and a half hour round trip drive to Compton to pick up flyers. I’m tired. I’m spent. and this video by the amazing BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD is making it all better.

Win Tickets To See Monotonix/Ty Segall TONIGHT at The Echoplex

Monotonix at Spaceland (2009) photo by anewidentity

I find it very awesome that Monotonix get shut down at nearly every venue they play but somehow always get invited back. Their insane live act is two parts face melting rock and three parts crazy party circus complete with rafter climbing antics, toppled over trash cans, and crowd surfing complete with full drum kit.

TONIGHT FYF Fest are presenting Monotonix at the Echoplex with the completely amazing TY SEGALL. Your attendance is mandatory.

Video: Cloud Nothings – Should Have

This video just makes me think of hairballs. My cat gets them all the time. I wonder if the kids in this video had a little fingertip full of petroleum jelly before filming.

“Should Have” is off Cloud Nothings’ new self-titled LP. You can pick it up now in the Carpark Online Store. This album is absolutely STELLAR. Two giant thumbs up from me.

Video: Twin Shadow – Shooting Holes (Yours Truly Session)

Well its been several months since I first started listening to Twin Shadow‘s debut album Forget. Pretty ironic album title considering I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since November. It’s official my go to album when I’m working, driving, and cleaning.

Twin Shadow recently filmed “Shooting Holes” at a Yours Truly session. Watch video for it below.

Ok I am officially obsessed with this show. Portlandia is a new IFC series starring comedic genius Fred Armisen and Sleater Kinney Guitar Shredder Carrie Brownstein. The series is a satirical look at life in Portland and by god they’ve nailed it on the head. Series premiere will go down tonight on IFC but you can watch clips online now right here.

Mutual Benefit – Desert Island Feeling

Mutual Benefit

I posted a few tracks last week by the Columbus, Ohio’s  Mutual Benefit as part of our massive post about Wednesday’s amazing show at Lot 1 Cafe.

I felt compelled to single out Mutual Benefit’s track “Desert Island Feeling”  today because I can’t stop listening to it. It’s got to be the layered sarcastic “oohs” and toy instruments. There’s even a toy xylophone solo at the end. Throw in the below video made by visual artist Think or Smile and I might as well be 8yrs old tripping on nitrus and the dentist’s office staring at the fish tanks.

Furthermore I love how laid back and honest Mutual Benefit‘s approach is to song craft. On the project’s tumblr blog “the band” (Only Jordan at the moment) says they are “a hodgepodge of music and art celebrating little epiphanies and being in love with everything.” Mutual Benefit only has two goals – Do cool stuff and be kind to each other. I can totally get behind a statement like that.

You can listen to it a LOT more music here: www.mutualbenefit.bandcamp.com

Video: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti On Fallon

Ariel Pink and his Haunted Graffiti made their TV debut last night on Jimmy Fallon performing “Round and Round.” Ariel acted like his normal aloof self while the band played to perfection in outfits that would make Roxy Music proud.

I don’t know what’s the best part  – watching Tim Ko rock the bass in that sassy dress or thinking about these guys hanging with Betty White (also a guest last night) backstage.

Try as they might there really is no one like Ariel. This performance was fucking brilliant.

Hi Ho Silver Oh – Showers Without Warning

Hi Ho Silver Oh

Hi Ho Silver Oh (Los Angeles, CA)

Hi Ho Silver Oh have always struck me as being an earnest sort of band – fighting alongside hundreds of other LA bands for the kind of exposure that can shoot a band you’ve never heard of before to Pitchfork BNM and SOLD OUT Bowery Ballroom shows seemingly overnight.

I’ll be honest. I hadn’t paid much attention to their progress over the past year. Boy am I eating my words now. Hi Ho Silver Oh have certainly caught my attention with their new track “Showers Without Warning.” The harmonies and tasteful percussive guitar on this haunting track are nothing short of GORGEOUS. the sparse and simple melodies are are tastefully and tactfully done. I honestly think with tracks like this this band could give Local Natives a run for their money.

The band’s “Showers Without Warning” 7 Inch is available now on Trailer Fire Records. The b-side is a Tom Petty cover featuring one of our other favorites – Leslie Stevens of Leslie and The Badgers fame.

Therapies Son – Touching Down

Therapies Son

We first wrote about Therapies Son not long after the first of his tracks “Red Red Rose” started appearing on a few noteworthy blogs.

Since then Alex Jacob (a 19 yr old Van Nuys, CA native) has played a handful of shows across Southern California, garnered even more great international press (NME radar pick, & Abeano) and recently announced plans to release his debut EP in March through UK label Transparent (Porcelain Raft, Lonely Galaxy, Wise Blood).

Quite honestly the left of center pop tunes brought to life by the brilliant twisted and deliciously weird mind of Alex Jacob are some of the best tunes we’ve heard in recent memory. Download the lumbering beatles-eqsue tune “Touching Down” below to see what we mean.

Therapies Son will be playing at the Echo in Los Angeles, CA on Feb. 11th opening for Yuck and Smith Westerns. If you were already planning on going you need to get there early.

Video: Best Coast – Crazy For You

Video: Best Coast - Crazy For You

I absolutely LOVE this. Best Coast premiered their new video for the title track off of their totally amazing debut “Crazy For You” on – get this - I Can Has Cheezburger. LOLZZ

Anyone who follows the band knows that front woman Bethany Cosentino’s cat Snacks plays a huge role in the band – even gracing the cover of the album. It is only fitting that Best Coast premiere their kitty themed video on a site entirely devoted to the human obsession with funny cat videos. It’s kind of the purrrrfect fit. yeah – I went there.

You can also enter a caption contest on I Can Has Cheezburger and enter to win tickets and swag from the band.

This is the kind of online marketing campaign I can totally get behind. Genius.
