The Dandy Warhols and Blue Giant at Club Nokia

at club nokia

The Dandy Warhols have already established themselves as musical icons with their songs “Bohemian Like You,” “Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth,” and “We Used To Be Friends.” In August of 2008 they released Earth To The Dandy Warhols, their sixth full-length album, on their own label Beat The World Records. Released initially as part of a subscription service that also gave members access to the exclusives through the rest of the year, the album was followed by a successful world tour. On July 14, 2009, Beat The World released The Dandy Warhols ARE Sound, the previously unheard “Director’s Cut” of 2003′s Welcome To The Monkey House.

Curren$y and Nipsey Hussle at the El Rey

at the el rey

Special guest sets by The Slausonboyz, The Pricks, Strong Arm Steady, Berner, J Stalin & More!

Hosted by Shiest Bubz.

New Orleans native, Shante Franklin, is also known as the acclaimed indie rapper Curren$y.

Curren$y began his recording career as an artist on Master P’s No Limit Records.  After developing a relationship with Lil’ Wayne, he later left No Limit Records in 2005 and signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment.  Curren$y worked closely with Lil Wayne and created music within the Young Money camp until late 2007.

Due to creative differences, Curren$y proceeded to take his style and music in a direction that fit him as an artist. Curren$y has evolved as an artist, and has perfected his lyrical delivery into a very unique sound. He also created the Jets International brand, a fresh approach to the new urban movement. With his own personal swagger and quick-witted lyrics, he is redefining the essence of what it means to be a southern rapper.

As an artist he has built himself as a brand by relentlessly releasing mix tapes, such as “This Ain’t No Mixtape” in 2009, and attacking the internet with creative tenacity and conviction for his music. Curren$y has recorded with acclaimed artists such as Lil’ Wayne, The Black Keys, The Disco Biscuits, Wiz Khalifa, The Cool Kids, and Mos Def. His latest album, “Pilot Talk, will be released on July 13, 2010. The album is produced by the legendary Ski Beatz, and it incorporates live instrumentation into Curren$y’s recorded and live stage performances.

Wu-Tang Clan at Club Nokia

at club nokia

Emerging in 1993, when Dr. Dre’s G-funk had overtaken the hip-hop world, the Staten Island, NY-based Wu-Tang Clan proved to be the most revolutionary rap group of the mid-’90s – and only partially because of their music. Turning the standard concept of a hip-hop crew inside out, the Wu-Tang Clan were assembled as a loose congregation of nine MCs, almost as a support group. Instead of releasing one album after another, the Clan was designed to overtake the record industry in as profitable a fashion as possible – the idea was to establish the Wu-Tang as a force with their debut album and then spin off into as many side projects as possible. In the process, the members would all become individual stars as well as receive individual royalty checks.

Surprisingly, the plan worked. All of the various Wu-Tang solo projects elaborated on the theme the group laid out on their 1993 debut, the spare, menacing Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Taking their group name from an powerful, mythical kung fu sword wielded by an invincible congregation of warriors, the crew is a loose collective of nine MCs. All nine members work under a number of pseudonyms, but they are best known as RZA (aka Prince Rakeem, aka Rzarecta, Chief Abbot, and Bobby Steels; born Robert Diggs), GZA/Genius (aka Justice and Maxi Million; born Gary Grice), Ol’ Dirty Bastard (aka Unique Ason, Joe Bannanas, Dirt McGirt, Dirt Dog, and Osirus; born Russell Jones), Method Man (aka Johnny Blaze, Ticallion Stallion, Shakwon, and Methical; born Clifford Smith), Raekwon the Chef (aka Shallah Raekwon and Lou Diamonds; born Corey Woods), Ghostface Killah (aka Tony Starks and Sun God; born Dennis Coles), U-God (aka Golden Arms, Lucky Hands, Baby U, and 4-Bar Killer; born Lamont Hawkins), Inspectah Deck (aka Rebel INS and Rollie Fingers; born Jason Hunter), and Masta Killa (aka Noodles; born Elgin Turner).

Mountainhood – Apacotees

MOUNTAINHOOD (California)

One of my least favorite musical genre names – FREAK FOLK.

Seriously what does that even mean? Freaky people who play homespun tunes with minimal acoustic instrumentation? I hate that name.

Visual artist Michael Curtis Hilde’s project Mountainhood probably gets placed under the banner of freak folk regularly. Hilde grew up in Aptos, CA – a speck on the map town up HWY 1 home to farmers and members of the Hells Angels. Hilde makes deliciously weird tunes that blends blues, pychadelic, and traditional folk music. The lo-fi recordings are filled with yelping participatory vocals and jangly instrumentation.  Almost sounds like you stumbled into a jam session in the woods.

The track below “Apacotees” is off their album “The Boat-makers Daughter” which is available now on Blackburn Recordings.

How To Dress Well @ The Echo

HOW TO DRESS WELL || WATCH

Garnering inspiration from a broad range of artistic, cinematic, philosophical, and musical sources How To Dress Well, aka Tom Krell, creates music that is provocative and compelling. Though the arrangements are remarkable, it is Krell’s singing voice that truly carries this record. At the heart of each song there is a chorus of disarmingly beautiful vocal lines that are as angelic as they are harrowing. His voice seems to swell up out of nowhere, the multiple tracks colliding with each other to form stirring, otherworldly harmonies, overtones, and distortions. His mysterious lyrics are delivered through striking vocal melodies as Krell experiments with his exceptionally wide vocal range. His work presents us with a complex and difficult sound that is somehow still immediately approachable: Krell’s compositions are abstract and yet unmistakably pop and r&b, are alien yet in no way alienating. Ultimately, How To Dress Well’s Love Remains is an exploration of voice and sound that transgresses typical expectations about song structure and the place of vocalization in the compositional whole in order to inspire thought and evoke enthralling images of what is left of love after it is broken and how to find in ourselves and in our truest bonds those places and moments where love remains.

Crocodiles @ The Echo

CROCODILES || LISTEN || WATCH

Charles Rowell and Brandon Welchez met as teenagers amidst this overwhelming feeling of emptiness. Playing in various groups since then, the duo struck out on their own as Crocodiles in April of 2008. They quickly self-released a 7″ single and used it as an excuse to escape their tarpit hometown, first touring up and down the west coast and then venturing across the whole of the U.S.

Crocodiles debut album, Summer of Hate, was recorded over the winter of 2008, and will be released by Fat Possum on April 28, 2009. it is born of the same alienation and frustration that fueled Charles’ and Brandon’s initial pairing. poppy vocal melodies are crushed with harsh electronic drums or lifted and left floating in spaced-out noise and echo. loud, wiry guitars jab wildly like mutant synapses skirting along a tightrope drone.

This is the dark side of the California sun. – HIGH ROAD TOURING

Screaming Females, Le Sera @ The Echoplex

SCREAMING FEMALES || LISTEN || WATCH

“Castle Talk” is the kind of breakthrough effort that should, by all rights, take Screaming Females from the basements to the national stage; there simply isn’t a weak track among the album’s 11 cuts. Over the years, Marissa Paternoster has become a serious force to be reckoned with both on vocals and the guitar, and when combined with Mike Abbate’s nimble work on the bass and Jarrett Dougherty’s full-speed-ahead drumming, she’s unstoppable. The band comes across on some songs (such as the excellent “Boss”) like the pissed-off younger siblings of early R.E.M. with hints of the Replacements and the Pixies, while on other numbers (including the hard-rocking “A New Kid”) they unleash nearly-metallic levels of sound and fury. Simply put, “Castle Talk” is an album that will have people talking, and with good reason. – METROMIX

LA SERA || LISTEN || Watch

La Sera has the same fun melodies and catchy hooks of the Vivian Girls, but without their fuzzy, garage-band effect. Instead, Goodman’s sugary vocals have an old-school vibe that remind us of the sing-a-long 1950s soda shop hits. And with most of her tracks under two minutes long, each one is totally short and sweet.

8pm / $8 advance; $10 day of show / all ages

Speculator – Pure Ecstasy

Speculator

Speculator (Los Angeles, CA)

Leaving Records has been one of my favorite bedroom labels for months now. I have been following their blog and discovering great music right here in my own back yard. The latest discovery that has been obsessing my headphones – Speculator.

MP3: Speculator – Pure Ecstasy

Speculator is a project of Los Angeles’ based musician Nick Ray.  I dont know what it is about the ambient tape hiss and warbling textures of the beats on this track but it puts me in a seriously zen mood during long brainstorming sessions. There is something fleetingly nostalgic about his relaxed and chill sound.

You can pick up Speculator‘s new cassette “Lifestyle” over at the Leaving Records website. you should check out some of their other releases as well while you’re over there!

You can download another track from Speculator called “I Wait A Day” over at Rose Quartz.
