Sean Carnage Presents: Big Whup Video Premiere w/ Peter Pants, Kid Static, David Liebe Hart and Adam Papagan @ pehrspace

The premiere of videos for “B.O.N.I.Z.H.E.A.R.T. ♥ ♥ ♥” and “COVER MY EYES,” with music by Big Whup, Kid Static, Peter Pants, and David Liebe Hart + Adam Papagan. Also featuring a collection of short films curated by Big Whup.

DJ Kyle Mabson

LA indie pop purveyors Big Whup celebrate the joint release of their first two music videos with a screening that pairs dictators with dancers and pillow fighting with glitter. Band members Drew Denny, Jenna Eyrich, Geoff Geis, Morgan Gee, and Rand Voorhies joined forces with directors Kate Gill and Matthew Chevlen for two whirlwind shoots featuring favorite LA locales (Elysian Park, Pehrspace, the Sweat Spot, Girlhouse) as well as fellow LA locals (including friends from musical projects including Nicole Kidman, Corridor, Essay, Peter Pants, Slumberbeast, and Johnny O’Donnell). Employing handmade pinatas, extravagant costumes, a well-worn stuffed Pegasus, and lots of underwear, the videos for “B.O.N.I.Z.H.E.A.R.T. ♥ ♥ ♥” and “Cover My Eyes” visually explore the quirky bliss for which Big Whup has become known throughout the last year. These two songs comprise Big Whup’s first vinyl single, which quickly went to #2 on KXLU after being self-released on May 1 to a capacity crowd at the Smell.

Along with the debut of the new Big Whup videos will be the screening of a collection of music videos and short films curated by Big Whup Industries, an extension of Big Whup that last year produced the popular What is Happening… compilation CD surveying the best in the Angelino D.I.Y. pop scene and this year released the first Big Whup single. Accompanying the screenings will be live musical performances from Big Whup, Kid Static, Peter Pants, David Liebe Hart & Adam Papagan (formerly of “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”), and DJ Kyle Mabson.

Part of an on-going weekly concert series promoted by longtime D.I.Y. stalwart Sean Carnage, this All Ages show is scheduled for Monday, December 13, at Pehrspace (325 Glendale Blvd).

Often descriptions of bands fall into the equation of “this well known group plus this other established act plus a few adjectives.” But some bands defy this shorthand, offering something so pure & true that its roots aren’t apparent. Everest is this sort, taking us down to foundational rock truths with an easy glide and expansive vision. While one can draw some clues from the folks they’ve toured with – Neil Young, Wilco, My Morning Jacket – ultimately Everest is simply a great rock ‘n’ roll band in the classic, open-minded mold, something boldly apparent on their sophomore release, On Approach (released May 11 on Warner Bros./Vapor Records).

Woom – Judith (Lucky Dragons Remix)

Lucky Dragons (Los Angeles, CA)

Happy Tofurkey day! Going to keep it quick so I can get to my various dinners and gluttonous potlucks. Today’s post is all about the LA experimental art, music, noise, and social project commonly known as  Lucky Dragons.

See, I thought Lucky Dragons had all but disappeared after the last year. The last time I saw them was when the project opened for Thom Yorke at The Orpheum Theatre over a year ago. I had no idea they were currently out on the road opening for No Age.

All I do know is the Lucky Dragon remix of Woom’s track “Judith” is amazing.

Summer Twins – The Good Things EP

I can’t tell you how many countless times someone has come up to me at a show and asked me to listen to their band. 9/10 times I graciously accept the demo which usually gets 1 unbiased listen before making its way to my trash bin. Sorry just being honest. Save your money and don’t stalk me at shows.

However there are occasional exceptions to the norm – as was the case when first meeting the ladies of Summer Twins. The introduction came from my friend Shane at The Echo one tired Sunday night in late September. Shane very genuinely said I should listen to them and introduced me to Chelsea and Justine from the band. I could tell from their grace and composure that they were not out to push their music on anyone. They gave me an EP which I listened to on the car ride home and instantly fell in love with.

There is a Zoey Dashanael quality to her voice and their simple pop songs about love and hope are achingly beautiful. The band have only played a few shows in Los Angeles so far. Most bands can relate to how hard it is to break into the scene here. If you have the opportunity to see them live I highly recommend it.

You can download their debut EP from Bandcamp for FREE. Also watch a new video for “Crying In My Sleep” below which comes via yvynyl.

Girl Talk – All Day

Girl Talk (Pittsburgh, PA)

I would have my blogging card revoked if I didn’t mention Girl Talk‘s new album ALL DAY. The mash up artists’ latest offering is one pre-packaged nostalgic party fest on wheels. Did I also mention it’s totally free and available on his label’s website.

Girl Talk recently announced a MASSIVE TOUR to take place in 2011. Hey if you’re offering up your record for free you gotta tour your ass off to make a living. You can find dates and pre-order tickets right here.

I think it’s fucking rad that just 3 years ago Hell Ya! Presented two back to back Girl Talk shows at The echoplex and now he’s coming back through playing THE PALLADIUM. So fucking rad!

Tape Deck Mountain – P.I.

Tape Deck Mountain (San Diego, CA)

I first was introduced to Tape Deck Mountain about a year ago. Their lush and warbly surf-inspired tunes are warm yet cryptic at the same time making their debut Ghost a darker foray into the ideals of the sun-drenched movement paying homage to the golden coast. Don’t make me say the word “chillwave” I seriously gag everytime that term is used.

This darker sound very apparent in their newest track “P.I.” -  which is the first song to be revealed off their upcoming “Secret Surf” EP out Jan. 11th on Lefse Records. There is a beautiful dynamic on this track. The echoing vocals cut through while the rest of the track sits back – almost as if you’re listening to it from another room. On the chorus the guitars kick in – loud and furious and erupt into what I can only call an “epic space jam.” Failure would be very proud.

Diamond Rings – Something Else

Diamond Rings has been around the blog block. The electro leaning indie rock tunes are catchy as fuck. “Something Else” features simple drum machine and guitars. There’s something almost brit pop and sarcastic about his voice. When I first heard it I thought it was Brandon Flowers. Anybody else hear the Killers influence in this track? I sure as hell do.

Diamond Rings is finally coming to Los Angeles on Nov. 23rd playing at the Echoplex. I can’t wait to ask him for makeup tips.

Its definitely Catchy.

Dirty Gold – California Sunrise

Dirty Gold (San Diego, CA)

Mp3: Dirty Gold – California Sunrise

Dirty Gold are a San Diego duo comprised  brothers John and Lincoln Ballif. They are also (according to Altered Zones)  still high school. Don’t hold the youth card up too high people – Their track “California Sunrise” is a  fabulous afro-pop inspired beach tune. Think Local Natives meets Vampire Weekend. I bet the band are probably sick of their age being a selling point. Interested to see what else they have to offer and hope they pass Algebra this year.

In the mean time watch the video below and download the track above!

Win Tickets To See Avi Buffalo Friday At The Echoplex

Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo (Long Beach, CA)

MP3: Avi Buffalo – Remember Last Time
MP3: Avi Buffalo – Raccoon

Long Beach’s  Avi Buffalo certainly have come a long way in only a year. This time last year the band were celebrating the release of their first 7 inch for “What’s In It For” at The Echo to a large but modest crowd of mostly friends and family.

Since then the band have released their debut record on Sub Pop, and toured all over the world playing shows with everyone from Wilco to My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse and Japandroids.

This Friday they will headline their first show at The Echoplex with special guests The Wildbunch and the much blogged about Lord Huron.

MP3: Lord Huron – Into The Sun (Bad Decision Remix)

This is going to be Avi Buffalo‘s last performance for 2010 as the band will be taking a break to focus on school and start writing a new album. This could be your last chance to see Avi Buffalo for a very long time which is why were giving away tickets!

Enter to win a pair of tickets to Friday’s show below.

YoursTru.ly also recently posted a video of the band performing “What’s In It For?” at Different Fur studios in San Francisco filmed earlier this year. Watch the video right here or view it below.

Evan Voytas – Tomorrow Night We’ll Go Anywhere

MP3: Evan Voytas – Tomorrow We’ll Go Anywhere

I’ve been a strong supporter of Evan Voytas for a few years now. He recently completed a residency at The Echo in Los Angeles and FINALLY the word is starting to get out about his amazing tunes.

Evan’s lo-fi fuzzed out electronic pop is total ear candy. I love his layered synths and echoing beats that come delivered in a layer of haze and glaze.  His new track “Tomorrow Night We’ll Go Anywhere” recently got some well deserved Pitchfork love. The EP of the same name is available now digitally via Cascine.

Blonde Redhead | Rock Insider

Blonde Redhead

MP3: Blonde Redhead – Here Sometimes

If someone were to ask me what my “Favorite Bands Of All Time” are I can’t imagine a list that doesn’t include Blonde Redhead.  “Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons” and “Misery Is A Butterfly” took up a hefty chunk of my early twenties.  Their album “23″ even came out the year I turned 23 – thereby making it a no brainer for my album of the year that year.

The band recently released their 8th studio album and 3rd on 4AD entitled “Penny Sparkle.” This album steers the band in a more ambient direction – quite possibly the farthest departure they have ever attempted, but still it’s a sonic journey that I can’t stop listening to.

This Tuesday and Wednesday Blonde Redhead will headline the Henry Fonda Theatre. Want to win tickets to see them Wednesday night? Enter using the form below!  Please use your full name and e-mail address you use most frequently so we con notify you if you’ve won.

ALSO: Blonde Redhead recently filmed a 4AD Session in New York City. Video came out absolutely stunning and is worth watching. Click here to view it now.

Sharon Van Etten – One Day

Sharon Van Etten (Brooklyn, NY)

MP3: Sharon Van Etten – One Day

Sharon Van Etten‘s deep, sultry, organic, and undeniably distinct voice haunts my dreams.  The Brooklyn native almost seems to effortlessly take the listener on a journey not based in fantasy but reality. You can almost picture yourself right next to her while she perfectly crafts each tune and understand why she chose the phrasing and voice for each piece.

Needless to say – I’m sold – BORDERLINE OBSESSED. Sharon Van Etten is quickly gaining on Neko Case as my favorite female vocalist.

Sharon’s new album Epic is just that – EPIC. The album clocks in at just 7 tracks so technically it’s more of a “mini album” than a full album. Every song packs a mean punch. It’s almost as if she chose to only pick the best of the best of her handcrafted tunes.

I spent a great deal of this weekend completely lost in tracks like “Save Yourself,” “Don’t Do It,” the enchanting “Love More,” and upbeat “One Day” – which lyrically is one of the best songs I’ve heard all year.

So much of music is about hype and perception. Sharon Van Etten is the real deal and a true talent. Download her new album on iTUNES and Emusic now. It’s only $5.99 if you buy it on iTUNES!

Sharon is currently on tour with Junip and played the Henry Fonda Theatre last night. If you live outside LA be sure to see her when she comes to your town.

3 Tracks For Your Saturday.

See it pays to read blogs on Saturdays. I’m starting a weekend series of tracks. Every Saturday I’m going to post 3 tracks I’ve been diggin on from the past week. Feel free to make any suggestions for tracks I should include or themes you would like to see.

MP3: Painted Face – Favorite One

New solo project from Allie Alvarado formerly of Telepathe and Blood Lines. Fabulous and energetic electro track loaded with synth bass. Her voice is really awesome.

MP3:  Woodsman – Insects

Denver’s Woodsman were apparently the toast of CMJ this year. I’m a sucker for the pensive building noise openings that melt into reverbed out guitars. Psychedelic rock at its finest. the band has a new LP out now on Mexican Summer. They are playing at Origami Vinyl tomorrow at 7pm FOR FREE

MP3: Seapony – Dreaming
I fucking love this band. I love this track. I love the glowing 90s indie pop that just shines out of Seapony’s music. So happy. So light. So reminiscent of a 15 year Jax sitting on the floor of her bedroom obsessing over IVY.  You can download their EP for Free on BANDCAMP. Strongly suggest you do so. You can also watch their new video for “Dreaming” below.

Having Fun On Stage With Fugazi

MP3: Fugazi – Having Fun On Stage With Fugazi (40 Min. Of Stage Banter)

Ahh it’s friday. I am so ready for the weekend it’s not even funny.

Last night I went to see Tennis and somehow was reminded about this little gem. Someone with way too much time on their hands managed to put together 40 minutes of Fugazi stage banter and arrange it into a podcast. Seriously it’s fucking PRICELESS and is making my Friday go by a lot faster.

Ian Mackaye slams the crowd with some of the most eloquent retorts I have ever heard in my life. Lots of story telling and questions to the audience about scalpers, ranting about hardcore dancing, and starting fights with rowdy members of the crowd and offering to take it outside. Like any of you needed me to tell you that Ian MacKaye is a fucking bad ass.

some gems below. Download the podacst above.

“In Fugazi’s world we don’t give people the finger to say hello. we say ‘Hi’”

“Where you from? Because I want to avoid the town you were raised in.”

“I don’t think this music’s that good for this guy to deserve a bloody nose”

“you act bad now but I saw you eating an ice cream cone. Ice Cream eating muther fucker”
