Avi Buffalo, The Wildbunch @ The Echoplex

AVI BUFFALO || LISTEN || WATCH || MP3

It was late in Avi Buffalo’s set on Saturday night that lead singer Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg declared that he’s “never written a love song,” the line arriving just as his band’s “Remember Last Time” was about to get lost in two minutes of guitar fancywork. The rush of noise, balanced by rather sweet backing harmonies, hit before anyone would have had time to call Zahner-Isenberg’s bluff.

Celebrating the release of its debut album for famed Seattle indie label Sub Pop, the Long Beach-based act’s hour-long set was filled with what many may indeed classify as long songs. Yet the young, fast-rising quartet — the majority of its members not far removed from high school — certainly strays from anything that could be classified as conventional.

This is pop at its most intricate and meticulous, with tightly-wound ’70s guitar balladry fighting for space with Rebecca Coleman’s more playful keyboard and synth textures. Songs don’t develop so much as take detours, with cuts like “Where’s Your Dirty Mind?” treating teen drama as a matter of life and death. Yet Avi Buffalo ponders mortality with grace, and the act balanced the serious with backwoods ease, especially when when Coleman’s soft vocals interlocked with those of Zahner-Isenberg, who is all high-pitched tension. – LA Times

The Urinals at Punk Reggae Party @ La Cita Downtown

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch seminal LA punk band THE URINALS live this Friday at PUNKY REGGAE PARTY (at La Cita).

Formed in 1978, THE URINALS were closer in style and ethos to The Fall or The Desperate Bicycles and the UK’s burgeoning DIY punk/post-punk movement. Minimalist punk. “A parody of punk,” they claimed. But then, so was Jilted John. So was Plastic Bertrand. Hell, so were The Ramones.

Other names to check by way of comparison: WIre, Warsaw, The Minutemen, Mars, Germs, (early) Black Flag, (earlier) Sonic Youth. And this is the sort of mad tunes you should expect throughout the nite this Friday…courtesy yer selecters from Part Time Punks & Dub Club.

$5 to get in.

And the band goes on at 11pm sharp.

Parson Red Heads Final Two Show As LA Residents

MP3: The Parson Red Heads – Raymond

So this post comes with a heavy heart and immense joy all at the same time. The Parson Red Heads will be playing the first of their final two shows as Los Angeles residents tonight at Spaceland with good friends Le Switch and The World Record. The band will be relocating to Portland after their final farewell show next Tuesday Sept 21st at The Echo.

The band of course will be back through Los Angeles on tour but I definitely feel the Los Angeles music scene is losing one of its finest and certainly hardest working bands.

Information for both shows can be found below. They are both $5 and you can get in for only $2 if you wear the Parson’s trademark all white.

—————————–

In addition I have also put the final 4 Parson Red Heads 7 inches we released here at JAXART Records up in our online store. If you didnt have the opportunity to purchase one prior this is YOUR LAST CHANCE to get one before they are gone for good!

My First Strip Club Experience With Big Freedia

So for those of you who follow me on twitter you may have heard I recently saw New Orleans favorite Diva – Big Freedia perform in a strip club (yes a strip club) at Music Fest Northwest. Best place to see the indie hip hop MC best known for the track “Azz Everywhere.” The whole thing was filmed by the FABULOUS video site “Into The Woods.”

Prior to this show I had never been inside a strip club IN MY LIFE and had no idea what to expect. My friend Ingrid and I walked in the front door and were immediately confronted by two fully nude strippers doing their thang. Apparently Portland has the most strip clubs per capita than any city in the United states. Perhaps it’s because girls in Oregon can go fully nude and the clubs serve alcohol as well. I was still pretty shocked at how many girls were in there with their boyfriends. It was seriously tripping me out.

Big Freedia hit the stage sometime after 1am with a host of strippers in tow. You can only assume that there certainly was “Ass Everywhere.” It was absolutely bananas. I needed a strong shot just to get through it.

the video from the show is now available online. You can watch it right here or below.  STRONG CAUTION: THESE VIDS ARE NOT SAFE FOR WORK

PS. Be Sure to bookmark Into The Woods. GREAT WEBSITE.

Big Freedia – WAS FUCKING AMAZING.
