Pitchfork premiered PAPA’s video for “I Am The Lion King today. Yes, I am aware that I seriously need to stop gushing on this PAPA EP. People are starting to get the wrong idea. It’s really simple peeps – SHIT IS GOOD. You need to give it a test drive.
Empire Of The Sun certainly know a thing or two about putting on a spectacle. Their stage show is filled with pagentry, style, dancers, glitter, lights, and more. Watch the video below to see what I mean. This could all come across as being too indulgent but when you pair it with their sacchrine crusted electro tunes it all makes total sense. It’s a guilty pleasure that you crave to get lost in.
I certainly don’t want anyone of you to miss their amazing over-the-top stage show which is coming to LA this Sunday October 16th at The Nokia Theater. So much so that Rock Insider is giving away 3 pairs of tickets to see the show this weekend!
A few friends have sent me this track recently so I figured it’s about time I finally shared. No is a project of Bradley Hanan Carter. The native of New Zeland is now based right in my backyard – Echo Park. His deep baritone vocals and strong prescence has drawm comparison to the likes of Matt Berninger from The National. No will release a debut EP Don’t Worry You’ll Be Hear Forever on November 11th. I have a strong feeling you’ll be hearing much more about it. A track this good doesn’t come around very often.
Well this seriously made my morning. Head over to Urban Outfitters where you can stream M83‘s glorious new album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming in its entirety as well as read an interesting interview with Anthony Gonzalez himself.
Are you on Hype Machine? I’m kind of seriously obsessed with it. You can subscribe to all your favorite blog feeds and then play it like a radio station. If Hype Machine had been around in the late 90s I probably would have lost my virginity to it.
Congrats go out to Nite Jewel – who recently signed to Secretly Canadian. Check out her new single “She’s Always Watching You” which will be available on 7 Inch vinyl via Yours Truly‘s label Love Letters Ink. It also includes a hand written note from Nite Jewel’s Ramona Gonzalez.
PAPA’s amazing new EP officially came out yesterday on Hit City U.S.A. and Psychedlic Judaism. The band are currently out on tour with Girls but will celebrate their EP Release next Wednesday Oct. 12th at The Bootleg. I think I’ve said this numerous times before especially via Twitter – YOU NEED THIS.

Frank Alpine is the alias of Rich Moreno – who is no stranger to the underground scene in Los Angeles.
While I’m still trying to wrap my head around all the different “wave” genres I stumbled upon one I’ve never heard of before – cold wave. Frank Alpines’s music has been described by many as such. Could it be due in part to his frantic synths and aggresive melodies that hold more than a few notes to cold war era kraut rock? Possibly… Frank however seems more inspired by David Lynch’s view of America.
Woke up this morning to rainclouds and the sound of the storm drain above my bedroom window rattling under the weight of last night’s showers. Yep. Fall finally decided to rear its ugly head. I’m sure I’m not the only one who wishes desperately for eternal summer but I’ll take a few days of other seasons here and there.
This change in season has made me especially itchy for new music. I stumbled across two great mixes on the web this week so I thought I would share!
First up – Quit Mumbling (which is quickly becoming one of my fav daily reads) has the September installment of their monthly mix featuring music from RACES, Kurt Vile, Young Galaxy, Chad Valley, A$AP Rocky, A.A Bondy and more. Download it here.
The Moor is a project born of love out of Erica Daking and Josiah Steinbrick’s Mt Washington basement. The duo began marrying Erica’s smoky vocals, minimal synth and washed out guitars back in 2008 and it’s been happily ever after ever since.
I can’t help but think how apropriately named this project is. Many may find their music firmly rooted in brit-pop but I find their album somewhat disarming. When listening images of a dark hazy morning overlooking an alien landscape marked by fog just coming out of sleep seem to dance in your head and you can’t help but be sucked in. Pick up their debut LP on iTunes via Dilettante.
Big ups to Chris at CoS for the heads up on this artist. I am a sucker for a haunting yet subtly strong female voice. Elena Tonra who performs under the moniker Daughter is all that and more. The 21 year old songstress hails from North London and has a new EP entitled The Wild Youth which will be out Nov 21st in the UK via Communion Records. Listen to two tracks off the EP below and be prepared to have your socks blown off.
If you love Sharon Van Etten and Florence + The Machine YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS.
What better way to start off the week than with a new video from Drake. What I really want to know is how necessary was it to tag a building with 2 story letters. Was it important to the artistic direction or overall concept of the video?
“Headlines” is off Drake’s forthcoming album, Take Care, out Oct 24th.
