Sometimes I Actually Love Rolling Stone

Kid Infinity – P.Y.C.O

Its fucking rare to find a hip hop song that’s telling people to actually put their clothes on. This is the case in Los Angeles’ own Kid Infinity‘s track “P.Y.O.C.” the banging track is a party anthem for sure from a progressive project that constantly seem to be bending the envelope.

A few weeks back the duo unveiled the 3D light technology originally designed for Michael Jackson’s London concerts at The Smell. The audience buzzed with anticipation while the band set up. When it was time to start the audience put on their 3D glasses and collectively had their minds blown. The show was nothing short of spectacular. You can read the full LA Times piece on the show right here.

The biggest question has been who was the star of this show – the band or the 3D technology? If you had never seen Kid Infinity before you would have nothing to compare it to correct?  Kid Infinity brought the raw energy and spontaneity from their usual show plus their damn catchy tunes worthy of any dance floor. The 3D – well,  that was just icing on the cake.

Kid Infinity return to the Smell this Friday night in 2-D. Sorry no 3D for this show but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go.  I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND you go check them out.

footnote: wouldn’t playing without 3-D projections still be 3D since its IRL?

Watch their video for “P.Y.C.O” below!

Next Up: Big Troubles

Someone called me out the other day on my recent obsession with lo-fi recordings or as they put it “lo-fi bands.”

I have to say it’s not necessarily the lo-fi sound that I love; but the spirit and energy that comes from recordings that sound like they were done in a bedroom studio. There’s an innocence and rawness to the songwriting and vocal performances that I find pleasantly refreshing from an industry that largely works on perfection. It’s like a vacation for the ears. Maybe thats why a large portion of it gives such and ode to the beach (see Best Coast, Real Estate, Ducktails, etc).

Maybe that’s why I fell in love with these two tracks from New Jersey’s Big Troubles. Their much blogged about pop-friendly tunes are enveloped in a warm blanket of fuzz, reverb, and great guitar licks. Basically everything I love about Slumberland Records in the early nineties.

Big Troubles have a new 7 inch out now on Old English Spelling Bee. You can order it right here.  They also just premiered a new video for their track “Bit Yr Tongue” which you can watch below.

Video: Robert Francis – “Junebug” on Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno

Last night Los Angeles’ own Robert Francis performed his single “Junebug” on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He certainly has come along way since his Echo Residency back in January of 2009.

Robert Francis hasn’t spent much time in LA lately. The singer/songwriter has been off touring the globe and even has a #1 Album in France and a full European Headline tour planned for the fall.

You can watch Robert Francis‘ performance on Jay Leno in the player below.

Rdio vs Spotify. In The U.S. Rdio Wins

I have been messing around with Rdio all week and must say I’m in love with the cloud based subscription model. I had a chance to beta test Spotify early on. It’s a great service but they’re currently stuck in negotiations with the four majors. This has left Rdio (now officially out of beta and open to the public) prime to take over the U.S. market.

Concept is simple. Rdio is a subscription based model that for 4.99 you can stream any record in their catalog for free. for $9.99 you can also enable Rdio on your mobile phone. The desktop player plays like iTunes and has a feature that will sync your already existing iTunes library with radio putting all the music you love all in one place and ALL at your fingertips. This is the first subscription model I have seen that really has a shot at taking on mass appeal.

Rdio does lack the free ad support subscription model that has made Spotify a household name is Europe. Spotify is hoping to continue negotiations to bring the service and its free ad supported model stateside.

I made a summer mixtape of my current fav tracks on Rdio. You can check it out at the link below. I strongly suggest signing up for the service – especially since their offering free 3 day trials right now.

Magic Kids – Memphis LP

I have been thoroughly obsessed by  Magic Kids ridiculously poppy tunes for the past few weeks.

The band has been out of the road opening for Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti taking their left of center borderline over the top classic pop to new audiences every night. Half their songs sound like they could be TV theme songs from the 1970s with hints of the beach boys and the best brit pop thrown in – but thats what I love MOST about them. This band just puts a smile on your face – plain and simple.

MP3 – Magic Kids – Good To Be

MP3 – Magic Kids – Summer

Their debut album will be out Aug 24th on True Panther Sounds. You can pre-order the record right here and recieve an instant MP3 download of the entire album.

Magic Kids will play the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa this Saturday August 7th.  Orange county be sure to get there early. You can also catch them at FYF Fest in Los Angeles, CA on September 4th!

Video: Creepy Stalker Fans Sneak Into Paramore Singer’s House

I’m sorry I don’t care where you come from – but breaking into your favorite celebrities house and then posting the footage of your crime on youtube is soo fucking stupid and just plain creepy.

Hayley Williams the singer of Paramore recently had two “super fans” break into her home in Franklin, TN with the assistance of a contractor working on her basement. The girls took down the video from their youtube account but once it’s out on the internet it never really goes away. You can watch their video below.

Moses Campbell Hit The Road

Moses Campbell

It’s almost Friday and you’re probably looking for a new music fix. Dont be an ass and download one of LA’s finest young bands – Moses Campbell.

MP3 – Moses Campbell – And It’s Over

The band recently released a full length album “Who Are You? Who Is Anyone?” on the Smell’s olFactory Records and have been steadily playing Los Angeles all ages spaces, coffee shops, art galleries, libraries, backyards, city parks, house parties for the better part of the year.

I have had the privilege of playing with them several times. Their folk tunes are performed with all the fervor and energy you’d expect from the usual noise-punk associated with the Smell scene. What sets Moses Campbell apart is a strong foundation in melody and some of the catchiest songs I’ve heard in recent memory. There is a spirit behind what they do. Music played with a sense of glee and fun. You can tell they are all so grateful and excited to just be playing music.

The band are heading off on a little west coast tour this week. Dates for their upcoming tour and be found below. Be sure to order a copy of their debut LP right here. Los Angeles readers’ be sure to check them out on the FOLD stage August 21st at this year’s Sunset Junction festival.

Ty Segall – Melted

Ty Segall is one of the best new artist I have discovered in a very long while. The lo-fi noise punk ingenue has been deftly wielding his unique brand of psychedelic garage punk all over the map touring incessantly and recording an impressive amount of material in a very short amount of time.  All at a ripe young age I might add. If I were making a list of artists you MUST CHECK OUT he would be at the top of the list.

MP3 – Ty Segall – Girlfriend

Ty Segall recently released a new LP – Melted on Goner Records. Ty also recently released a split 7″ with other Rock Insider fav Jeff The Brotherhood. You can purchase the 7 inch now from Infinity Cat Records. Its pressed on peach marbled vinyl. Pretty schnazzy.

Ty Segall is hitting the road in the US this August. He plays at the Smell tonight in Los Angeles with Royal Baths (Woodsist) and YellowFever. Check out more tour dates below.

Tennis – Baltimore

Not sure if you’re aware of this but there is quite the burgeoning indie scene going on right now in Colorado. It could be directly related to the recent influx of tech jobs into the state + great selection of state schools has created a demand for indie rock. Could also be all those long winters creating the perfect environment to be shut in all day working on songs.

For whatever reason  Colorado has been pouring out a massive amount of amazing bands in the past few months. I grew up in Utah and I could not be more pleased to finally see a productive music scene coming out of the mountain states. Expect to see an on salught of posts featuring Colorado bands in the coming weeks.

One of my favorites currently breaking out of the Rockies is Denver based husband and wife duo TENNIS. Their songs evoke the nostalgic vibes of 60s pop and girl groups  with all the lo-fi fuzz that puts them in the same class as contemporaries Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast, And Wavves.

Download “Baltimore” below from their forthcoming 7″ EP out soon on one of my favorite labels Underwater Peoples. Pick up the 7 inch right here.

Christmas Island – Blackout Summer

I’ve only recently purchased Christmas Island‘s debut album “Blackout Summer” off emusic. Kind of obsessed with this track called “Anxiety Attack” right now. Christmas Island hail from the sunny southern tip of California (San Diego to be exact). They totally remind me of all the best parts of early 90s alternative and pink w/ a pinch of 60s pop. If you dig The Urinals you will love this band.

Blackout Summer LP is available now on In The Red Records. You can also pick up a 7″ out now on Captured Tracks.

Purchase at INSOUND.

She’s baack…. What’s Happening In LA This Week?

FUUUCK where has the year gone? You remember that promise I made to continue blogging and keep at it? Well, it kinda went out the window along with my exercise plan and resolution to learn Swedish (jobbar på det).

Posting will still remain sporadic but I’m certainly trying to keep things up to a regular pace. I have been listening to a lot of great new music lately that I can’t wait to share with all of you. So many great new bands popping up – time for something new out there if you ask me.

First things first. You’re probably asking “WHAT THE FUCK HAVE I BEEN DOING LATELY?”

well, in addition to working long hours and loving my job and my coworkers immensely I have been hard at work releasing new albums for my little label that could JAXART Records.

So far this summer JAXART has put out 2 releases. A limited edition 7 inch single for New Jersey lo-fi duo Slow Animal and the new EP from LA’s newest Noise Pop trio POLLS.

If you missed POLLS debut at the Bootleg Theater last Tuesday you can catch them again at the Grandstar in Chinatown this Friday w/ Superhmanoids, John Carpenter, and Lord Huron. The show is being Sponsored by Aquarium Drunkard.

Slow Animal are finishing up their US tour this week playing shows with Bear In Heaven and one of my new favs Cloud Nothings. Watch out for an amazing video for “theFUNsun” shot by the amazing Vice Cooler in the next few weeks. You may recognize Vice from his videos for Signals and Male Bonding. We made a royal mess while filming so its bound to capture your attention.

It’s the first of the month so that means NEW RESIDENCIES STARTING UP. I suddenly realized how insanely LA I’ve become when I found myself in the company of a crew of kids from the east coast and none of them had any idea what a residency is exactly supposed to be. Quite honestly I’m not sure if LA even knows what this past time (now in its 5th year) on East Sunset Strip is.

Basically folks – A residency is an excuse to go out on a work night to see free music from bands you’re going to have to pay top dollar for in abt 2 years. That and drink a lot while bands aren’t getting paid anything more than scene cred and the occasional CD sale.  Case in point – Silversun Pickups headlining the Greek Theater this Friday August 6th with support from The Henry Clay People. People please support local music on these nights and instead of buying 4 beers try 2 and BUY SOME MERCH FROM THE BANDS.

VIDEO: OK GO – End Love

It is no mystery that I love and truly adore OK Go. I worked with the band on their last record Oh, No while I was at Capitol Records. The band recently split ways with EMI. Now on a label of their own making the band are free to do whatever they want with their videos including offering up their latest eye popping experiment “End Love” to fans to download for free on their website. They  even launched a pretty web savvy contest using Facebook promoting one and all to download that shit totally for free.

There is seemingly no end to their creativity when it comes to making eye catching and stunning videos. Watch it below!!

PS. The video for “End Love” was filmed on Echo Park Lake. I actually live right on Echo Park Lake. You can actually see my house. haha
