Pearl Harbor Are Now Puro Instinct

Thanks to Gorilla vs. Bear for this tasty tid-bit. Lo-Fi Pop duo Pearl Harbor have officially changed their name to Puro Instinct and have just released a new EP.

Changing band names seems to be a trend in Los Angeles these days. The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra=Walking Sleep. Afternoons=Shadow Shadow Shade. The Muslims=The Soft Pack. The Weather Underground=Red Cortez.

I quite liked the name Pearl Harbor so hopefully Puro Instinct grows on me.

Maybe this means I should change the name of this website?

The band will also be touring later this summer with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. You can also pick up a new digital EP direct from the band for only $5 on bandcamp. All the money goes straight to the band so be a dear and buy direct.  The EP will be out on vinyl later this summer on Gloriette.

Neverever – Angelic Swells

Neverever | Rock Insider

Neverever now call Los Angeles home by way of Glasgow, Scotland. I had the pleasure of seeing them live back in late 2009. They were the last band to play but MAN was I capitavated and in awe.

I am a sucker for classic rock n’ roll tunes circa late 50s early 60s. Neverever sits comfortably amid the sock hops and teenage culture of the time. Their sound is part glam, part retro with everything enveloped in a blanket of lo-fi fuzz and delicious noise. Singer Jihae Meek’s voice is deep and sultry and it almost sounds like your listening to them on a vintage radio adding even more to the summer lovin’ vibe.

Neverever recently released their debut album Angelic Swells on Slumberland Records – The label home bands like Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Stereolab. you can pick up a copy of the album right here.

If you live in Los Angeles you can catch the band at their CD Release show Tomorrow June 12th at the Kibitz Room in Hollywood and again June 14th at Synchronicity Gallery with Nodzzz, Animal Style, and Dunes.

New Japandroids – “Younger Us” 7 Inch

I got to know Brian and Dave of Japandroids a little bit this spring while Avi Buffalo were on the road with them. There is no denying how dedicated, hardworking, and absolutely crazy these guys are. Haha. Some of the coolest dudes I have ever met.

The band have been on the road for well over a year and are continuing strong after the release of last year’s much touted and loved LP Post-Nothing.

Japandroids have been releasing a series of five 7 inch singles this year – The 2nd and most recent of which for the below track “Younger Us” which is a rawkus post-punk anthem with an energy and genuine spirit that I think only Brian and Dave could pull off. These guys are the real deal. Download the track below and pick up the 7 inch right here.

New Washed Out Track – ‘You And I’

So most of you who follow me on Twitter know what a huge fan of WASHED OUT aka Ernest Greene I am. Yesterday the project unveiled a new single recorded for Kia Adult Swim Singles Program featuring Caroline from Chairlift. This track has been on repeat for the last 24 hours. It is quite the breezy hypnotic tune. Sooo good.

Cloud Nothings – Turning On

You know – Last.fm has proven to be one of the best tools to finding new music I’ve used in recent years. My most recent last.fm discovery – Cloud Nothings from Cleveland, OH.

Tracks like “Hey Cool Kid” showcase  lo-fi infectious pop gems with the typical high gain vocals + distorted guitars you would expect to hear from a bedroom recording.

Then you hear tracks like “Even If It Worked” (the b-side of their new “Didn’t You”  7 Inch coming out June 24th) which is a better recording that lets the deliciously catchy hooks breathe. The lyrics thrust me right back into that time period of post high school love affairs with earnest vocals and jangly guitars. Without a doubt Cloud Nothings show a lot of promise. Download two tracks below!

Cloud Nothing’s debut LP  Turning On is out now on CD on Bridgetown and on vinyl from Speaker Tree. The band  are currently on tour with WAVVES. Remaining dates can be found below.

The Fresh And Onlys – Second One To Know

The Fresh & Onlys

The Fresh & Onlys (San Francisco, CA)

Remember once upon a time when I actually used to post about new music on this website? I know. Hard to remember those days since its been so long. I wanted to introduce you to one of my recent obsessions: The Fresh and Onlys from San Francisco, California.

They already have a pretty solid pedigree of releases out on a who’s who of  influential independent labels including Woodsist and In The Red. Their shambolic sun soaked psychedelic tunes seem almost ideal for Nor Cal summer driving.

The Fresh and Onlys
‘ released a new 7″ single in January on Woodsist. You can pick it up right here. If you live around San Francisco be sure to check them out June 10th at Great American Music Hall w/ Sleepy Sun and at the Woodsist Festival in Big Sur June 12th!

Where the hell have we been?

Why hello one and all – It’s been a while…..

No doubt you have noticed a complete and total lack of posting on rock insider over the course of the last two months. Truth be told I have been working on other projects and opportunities. I’m sorry for the interruption in service to the music community of LA at large.  Rock Insider has been a labor of love for a little over 5 years. As with anything there comes a time to focus on other things so that we can come back to our passions with renewed vigor.

I just wanted to post a note saying that rock insider is NOT DEAD. we are simply taking a break to re-evaluate things and make this website even better than before. I thank you for your patience.

Coming up this week: A new format for the concert calendar, one of our famous mixtapes, and new features that should renew your interest and excite your senses.

Thanks again for following us.

This Week In LA: Broken Bells, BRMC, Laura Veirs, Little Boots, You Say Party We Say Die, Crystal Antlers, Abe Vigoda, Lovvers

Broken Bells

Broken Bells (AKA James Mercer of The Shins + Danger Mouse)

Well Well Well….This is Awkward.
I kind of skipped a week here at Rock Insider headquarters while I was in NYC to see the first two dates of Avi Buffalo’s spring tour with Rogue Wave. The band were also just chosen to play the Pavement curated All Tomorow’s Parties Festival in Minehead in May! Crazy stuff in store over the next few months.

Also crazy stuff in store this week in LA. Broken Bells will be playing a SOLD OUT show this Sunday at The Troubadour. My brother caught their preview show at The Bootleg a few weeks back and is still raving about the James Mercer (Shins) and Danger Mouse (badass) collab. Check out a video of the duo playing “The High Road” below.

Also this week in LA: YOU SAY PARTY! WE SAY DIE! FINALLY WILL BE PLAYING IN LOS ANGELES!!!!!!!!!!!
A few years back the band got detained at the Canadian border and weren’t allowed to enter the United States for 2 years!!! ahh I’m so excited.

Concert Calendar w/ picks below! See you out at shows?

Los Angeles Scene News: L’Keg Fire, Local Natives New Album Out, FTO Now Walking Sleep

L"Keg Gallery Fire

L'Keg Gallery Fire. Closed Until Further Notice

Why hello everyone,

I am sure you no doubt miss my rambling blog posts and daily missives on the music community in Los Angeles. I have taken a very long hiatus from regular postings outside of my weekly concert calendar due to a demanding work load and other priorities in my life.

Plenty of news going on in the Los Angeles music community right now so and I felt inspired to report some of it. Who knows maybe I will be getting back into the swing of blogging regularly again. In the mean time here’s a quick recap of some of what’s going on…

L’KEG GALLERY FIRE. VENUE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

One of my favorite venues to visit/play L’Keg Gallery in Echo Park caught on fire last night and will be closed until further notice. All shows scheduled for the next few weeks including Harlem‘s show TOMORROW night have been canceled. As reported by L’Keg on their facebook page the fire came from outside the venue with the bulk of the damage being sustained to the venues door and roof. Nobody was injured in the fire and no artwork was damaged.

No word yet on if a donation fund has been set up for the gallery but if you would like to help out you can email L’Keg through their website.

THE FLYING TOURBILLON ORCHESTRA ARE NOW WALKING SLEEP

The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra are now Walking Sleep

First Afternoons become Shadow Shadow Shade and now The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra have decided to hop on the name change wagon and will now be called Walking Sleep. Check out the hilarious video of the band made about their forthcoming album, upcoming Echo residency, and of course the name change. I never quite mastered whether it was Tourbillion or Tour-bbeeee-on or Toooourbilllllllion……

This Week In LA: This Week In LA: St. Vincent, The Album Leaf, Sea Wolf, Imaad Wasif, Mumford & Sons, Pocahaunted

Best Coast’s Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino

Hello everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night’s NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age, Vivian Girls, Best Coast, Graham Forest, Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast‘s performance as one of their most entertaining yet. As I have said several times before – watch out for that band.

Tons of great shows this week including St. Vincent at The El Rey which I have been looking forward to for MONTHS! Its been far too long since I’ve had my Annie fix. Her new video for for “Laughing With A Mouth Full Of Blood” is amazing.

Also this week Brit buzz band Mumford & Sons will play a SOLD OUT show at The Troubadour and The Album Leaf will play at the El Rey Theatre with Sea Wolf on Saturday. The Monolators will also play their first show ever at The Smell this Friday with Make Me from San Francisco!

Did we forget any shows? Add to the hype machine! Feel free to send us an email to tonightinla@rockinsider.com.

THIS WEEK IN LA: The Soft Pack, VV Brown, Patti Smith, Pink Floyd Experience

The Soft Pack 10 Release Shows In 1 Day This Sat. Jan 30th, 2010

We’re back from an extended hiatus while we were out on the road!!!

First things first – Beach House‘s amazing 3rd album “Teen Dream” is available NOW on Sub Pop. The album is already #10 on the iTUNES album chart! People seriously this record is a MUST LISTEN. Pitchfork even gave it a well deserved 9.0. I’ve listened to “Walk In The Park” at least 9 times today alone. Download “Norway” from the album in the side bar.

Crystal Antlers – Tentacles from The Heap on Vimeo.

Second – Crystal Antlers have a new video for their track “Tentacles.” WATCH IT RIGHT HERE.

Crystal Antlers are back in Southern California after pretty much a 1.5 years of straight touring. The band are working on writing and recording their sophomore album. Really excited to see how things progress.

So many great shows this week including FYF Presents 10 shows in 1 day with The Soft Pack this Saturday Jan. 30th. Avi Buffalo will be playing with them at the FMLY Mansion in Venice at 1PM. THE SHOW IS FREE! For all the details on the other 10 shows follow FYFFest or The Soft Pack on twitter. You can also find details right here.

THIS WEEK IN LA: Vampire Weekend, Adam Franklin & The Bolts Of Melody, A.A. Bondy, Jam For Ron Asheton, Yummy Fur

Vampire Weekend Album Release Show At Henry Fonda Theatre Tues. Jan. 12th

Happy Monday everyone!

This first week back after the holidays certainly was a productive one! So many great shows so little time. I did manage to catch 60-Watt Kid and Glasser at Spaceland on Saturday. 60-Watt Kid BLEW MY FREAKIN MIND. Their lush spacey songs are will know doubt draw comparison to Animal Collective and Atlas Sound but their energy is straight up punk rock. If you haven’t had the opportunity to catch this band yet do yourself a favor and make it a priority.

Lots of great shows this week including Vampire Weekend’s SOLD OUT date at The Henry Fonda and Wednesday’s Jam For Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton at The Roxy featuring Mike Watt among others.

Our show of the week however is a slam dunk at Spaceland this Sun. Jan 17th with Adam Franklin (Swervedriver) and The Bolts of Melody. You will want to arrive early for the opening acts. Also playing next Sunday will be a new project by Mr. Jack Burnside of Mezzanine Owls fame that has be christened with the name Rabbits. Jenni Tarma (Eskimohunter) Dan Horne (Mezzanine Owls, Music Go Music, Beachwood Sparks), and Chris Newcomer (The Arms) will also be sitting in.

This Week In LA: Sonic Youth, Atlas Sound, Brilliant Colors, Woodsman, Best Coast

Brilliant Colors (San Francisco, CA)

Welcome back from the holiday break! It is a new decade can you believe it? I sure can’t. I even went as far as accidentally writing 20010 on my rent check because I’m so used to the double zeroes.

Plenty of amazing shows this week including our show of the week featuring San Francisco’s Briliant Colors. Seriously download their track “Absolutely Anything” in the sidebar and tell me that’s not a smash. They will be joined by Best Coast, Dunes (feat the fabulous Kate Hall on drums), and Animal Style. Let’s just say you’d be kicking yourself if you missed this show.

Up and coming Mexican Summer glo-fi/ambient act Woodsman will also hit LA this week playing three show including a free in-store at Origami on Tues. Jan 5th. I really enjoyed their new Collages LP. Pick it up right here.

Bradford Cox of Deerhunter will bring his Atlas Sound side project to the Natural History Museum Friday night kicking off their First Fridays series. He will be joined by the fabulously eccentric Tune-Yards.

Oh and some band called Sonic Youth are in town playing two make up shows. If anyone has an extra ticket just lying around please feel free to e-mail me.

Did we forget any shows? Feel free to send us an email to
tonightinla@rockinsider.com.

This Week In LA: Morrissey, Passion Pit, Avi Buffalo, Pearl Harbor, Evan Voytas

Pearl Harbor (Los Angeles, CA)

Well last week just flew by didn’t it? December seems to do that..

This week is pocked with holiday celebrations and last shows of the year. An amazing amount of solid local bills this week. If you haven’t ventured out to see local music in quite some time might I recommend getting out of your house to check out Shirley Rolls, The Henry Clay People, Tearist, Correatown, Avi Buffalo, Pizza!, Signals, Evan Voytas, and Le Face at some point this week?

There are also plenty of Holiday Soirees to make sure you’ll be well fed and slighty tipsy. Remember to drive safe out there…

New batch of MP3′s can be found in the sidebar. Download them now so you know what’s going on with music.

Did we forget any shows? Feel free to send us an email to
