THIS WEEK IN LA: Cold Cave, Girls, Little Girls, Abe Vigoda, Nite Jewel, Pity Party

Thanksgiving is officially behind us and now it’s full force til Christmas. The entire music industry shuts down after Dec 10th which means far less tours but more holiday parties stocked with Egg Nog!

Some scene gossip: Local Natives have just signed to French Kiss Records and will be putting out their debut LP Gorilla Manor on Feb. 17th. Congrats gents! I have known Local Natives a very long time and I’m excited they’ve found such a good home.

Indie darlings Cold Cave will return to Southern California this week with two shows. I missed them at FYF Fest back in September and I’m excited to see them for the first time this week.

Also highly recommended this week is Toronto Lo Fi project Little Girls who will be playing at The Bordello this Wednesday Dec. 2nd w/ Jubilee and Whoa Hunx and who could forget Girls at The Troubadour this Sat. Dec. 5th w/ The Morning Benders and Tamaryn.

Download music in the sidebar.

Did we forget any shows? Feel free to send us an email to tonightinla@rockinsider.com.

Taking A Little Break From Blogging…

Hello everyone,

I’m sure you’ve no doubt noticed my severe lack of writing over the last two months. As life has become increasingly hectic and the demands of the 70 other things I do in addition to keeping this blog have become more trying I have decided to put Rock Insider on a bit of a hiatus.

I will still be posting the occasional video, upcoming events, and great MP3s but not on a daily basis.

This is not me quitting the blog world for good. Think of it as a little bit of a vacation :) Rock Insider has been a daily obsession of mine for over 4 years. I don’t see my willingness to write about music diminishing anytime soon.

Hopefully we will be back and better than ever before you know it!

Sincerely
JAX

The Feelies "Crazy Rhythms" & "The Good Earth" Re-Issues Out Now

[MP3] The Feelies – Crazy Rhythms
[MP3] The Feelies – On The Roof

This year has been probably the best year in recent memory for re-issues but none have grabbed my interest as much as Bar/None‘s release of The Feelies two classic albums “Crazy Rhythms” and “The Good Earth.” you bet your ass I ordered these LPs the second they went on pre-sale.

The Feelies recently played “Crazy Rhythms” start to finish at ATP last weekend in NYC. You can watch video of their performance below.

ORDER BOTH ALBUMS FROM BAR/NONE’S WEBSITE.

1

Ducktails – Landscapes

There is something deliciously youthful about New Jersey based ambient noise artist Matthew Mondanile aka Ducktails‘ amazing new album Landscapes. Matthew’s raw lo-fi mostly instrumental tracks seem to radiate postive energy and a feel that is decidedly SoCal. The album features loads of delay-riddled guitar, warbled fuzz, and child-like synths.

Landscapes is out now on Old English Spelling Bee. Purchase the LP right here.

Blonde Moment: Crocodiles Play To A Drum Machine?

[MP3] Crocodiles – I Wanna Kill
[MP3] Graffiti Island – WolfGuy

I went to go see Crocodiles at Spaceland on Thursday night and felt severely jipped to discover that the band plays to a drum machine and bass track. Their live show was good but it certainly lacked a fair deal of punch that a solid rhythm section can offer.

I later learned in my youtube musings that the band ALWYAS play to a drum and bass track. My blondeness rears its ugly head. Watch the interview above with Nylon TV.

Crocodiles “Hollow Hollow Eyes” from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

More at Yours Truly.

I really like Crocodiles tunes and think they are definitely a band to watch but feel they lack the ability to get to the next level without a full live band. Get on it dudes.

I also picked up their 4 way tour split 7 inch with Graffiti Island, Dum Dum Girls, and Pens which is out now on Art Fag Recordings. You can buy it online right here.

SIDE NOTE: Graffiti Island were great last night.

The Bear w/ Live Score By No Age This Sunday At Cinefamily

No Age To Play Live Score Set at Silent Movie Theatre This Sunday

File this under awesome events. The fine folks at Cinefamily (AKA The Silent Movie Theatre) are continuing their Live Scoring series this Sunday with a showing of The Bear with Live music score courtesy of No Age.

Their will be two showings at 8pm and 10:30, and tickets are available for $15

I highly recommend signing up for their mailing list to learn about future events and showings. They are definitely doing something inventive and awesome.

FROM CINEFAMILY:
L.A.-based, world-renowned experimental noise pop duo No Age will appear live at the Cinefamily to perform their brand-new score for Jean-Jacques Annaud’s majestic 1988 film The Bear, a near-wordless cinematic expedition deep into the savagery and tenderness of the animal kingdom. Told from the titular species’ point of view, The Bear chronicles the journey of an orphan bear cub and a lone adult bear banding together to avoid two human hunters. Along the way, director Annaud has great fun with the storytelling possibilities from a non-human perspective, including dream sequences and an unforgettable psychdelic mushroom bear trip! With nearly no (human) dialogue, the film easily lends itself to live scoring, and No Age drummer Dean Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall have crafted a shimmering 90-minute set of sonic blasts and delicate textures that perfectly complement the peculiar, touching and altogether unique experience that is The Bear.
