Video: Randy From No Age Takes A Tumble

No Age (Los Angeles, CA)

This weekend seems to be an eventful one for injuries. Randy from No Age dislocated his shoulder during a dance-off at the Milwaukee stop of their Round Robin Tour with Deerhunter and Dan Deacon. Watch in the video below as Randy slips in some spilled beer at around the 2:50 mark and takes a nasty tumble. In true punk rock form the band still made it to Chicago to perform their set at Lollapalooza. Kudos.

Randy I hope you got some awesome pain killers! No Age also posted a message on their blog letting everyone know that he’s ok!

My friend Reba managed to break her toe on a coffee table on Friday. It seems like my notorious bad luck is rubbing off on people….

Wishing both of you a speedy recovery!!

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: Midsummer Nights, Herbie Hancock, Black Heart Procession

Music Go Music – Warm In The Shadows

Music Go Music (Highland Park, CA)

[MP3] Music Go Music – Warm In The Shadows

Thanks to The Tape for this one. Music Go Music – the new project of David and Meredith Metcalf of Bodies Of Water have a new live video out. The project is heavily influenced by dance music and dare I say it – disco. A lot of blogs have stated the band has an obvious ABBA influence. Their music has a fabulous warm analog feel to it and is the perfect homage to 70s era disco and David Bowie.

You may recognize a few east side staples in the backing band in the video below – most notably Dan Horne of Mezzanine Owls fame.

The band will be playing a few live shows in LA and San Francisco this month. Be sure to check them out at the Bordello on August 26th and again on September 18th at The Roxy with Little Boots.

Their debut album Expressions in all its disco inspired glory will be coming out on Secretly Canadian (also home to Bodies of Water) in the states on October 6th, 2009. The band will be releasing the album is Europe as well via Mercury Records.

08/26 Los Angeles, CA The Bordello w/ Rainbow Arabia
09/18 Los Angeles, CA The Roxy w/ Little Boots
09/19 San Francisco, CA The Independent w/ Little Boots

1. I Walk Alone
2. Thousand Crazy Nights
3. Light of Love
4. Reach Out
5. Explorers of the Heart
6. Love, Violent Love
7. Just Me
8. Warm in the Shadows
9. Goodbye, Everybody

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: Princeton, Chief, The Sadies, Summer Darling

[MP3] Princeton – Calypso Gold
[MP3] Chief – Stealing

[JAX PICK] The Rumble w/ Chief, Princeton, Cheetahsaurus @ 3 OF Clubs – The fine folks at Future Sounds are busting out another stellar lineup at their monthly night at 3 of Clubs. Tonight’s performance features Domino Recordings latest west coast offering Chief (we featured them on friday), local heroes Princeton, and relative newbies to the LA scene Cheetahsaurus from Ventura, CA.

Besides having one of the best bands names I’ve seen in recent memory Cheetahsaurus actually have some suprisingly good tunes they simply describe as “other.” They are definately worthy of merit and praise. Check them out on myspace.

Joe Doe, The Sadies @ The Echoplex – I think The Sadies are for me the quintessential Los Angeles to San Francisco drive soundtrack.

Robotanists, Summer Darling, Vanaprasta @ Silver Factory Studios - LA-Underground are presenting this show. Robotanists are getting a lot of airplay on KCRW these days. Get the details here.

Busdriver Announces Tour With Abstract Rude

Busdriver (Los Angeles, CA)

[MP3] Busdriver – Me – Time (With The Pulmonary Palimpsets)

I saw Busdriver at The Echoplex last Friday and was ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY. One of the best live acts I have seen all year and quite possibly – EVER.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen an artist so creative with THAT MUCH charisma. Busdriver is an undeniable talent.

Busdriver is hitting the road in September in support of his latest album – the critically acclaimed Jhelli Beam – which is out now on Epitaph/Anti. You can purchase the album digitally on iTUNES.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: Dawes, Slang Chickens, Luke Top, Abe Vigoda

Dawes (Los Angeles, CA)

[MP3] Dawes – When My Time Comes

Dawes, Slang Chickens @ The Echo – Dawes begin their Wednesday night ALL AGES residency at The Echo this week. The band are also doing a residency on Monday nights down at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa.

Dawes have really been through the ringer and back again. I must say that this is my favorite incantation of the band so far. You may remember back when they were called Simon Dawes and were signed to Record Collection. Their new tunes are even more roots driven show a strength and growth that can only come with overcoming obstacles. Download “When My Time Comes” above. The tracks is absolutely fantastic. The chorus just kills me.

The show is free over 21 Yrs and just $7 under 21.

PS. Slang Chickens are one of my favorite developing acts in Los Angeles. If you get the opportunity to see them live you will not be disappointed.

Luke Top @ Pershing Square – The performer with an AMAAZING VOICE is also is a member of Fool’s Gold and has played with Foreign Born, Big Search, and Cass McCombs among others. I have a feeling his soul-filled whistful tunes will go over very well in the crisp air of summer at dusk. Read an interview with Luke Top over at Radio Free Silverlake.

Abe Vigoda, Man’s Assassination, Man, The Cysts, BiPolar Bear @ The Smell - Man’s Assassination, Man is a side project of Jon and Bill Gray (formerly of The Mae Shi, Current members of Signals). Abe Vigoda and BiPolar Bear will also play making this show a sure fire smash.

Longwave @ The Wiltern – Ignore the fact that they are opening for Blue October. Longwave are actually a really solid and entertaining act.

Dawes “Love is All I am” from THE FEAR on Vimeo.

Wallpaper – Pool Party (Featuring Jacob Safari & Kid Static)

Wallpaper (Oakland, CA)

[MP3] Wallpaper – Pool Party (Featuring Jacob Safari & Kid Static)

I don’t know why I haven’t gotten around to posting this track. It has been stuck in my head for almost a solid month.

The track was a collaborative effort of Jacob Safari (The Mae Shi, Signals) Wallpaper, and Kid Static.

Looking for a summertime slow jam to add to your next mixtape? This by george is IT.

Wallpaper has a new album coming out on Eenie Meenie called Doodoo Face (I kid you not) on September 22nd. The album will be released September 8th on iTUNES.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: Lykke Li, The Deadly Syndrome, Ting Tings, Megafun, Bowerbirds, Agent Ribbons,

[JAX PICK] Lykke Li, The Deadly Syndrome @ The Wiltern – Good to see The Deadly Syndrome playing once again. Lykke Li is no doubt the crush of the indie world. My coworkers have been playing her incessantly for the past week.

Lykke Li – Tonight from Lykke Li on Vimeo.

[JAX PICK] War Tapes, Agent Ribbons, Sister Crayon, VOICEsVOICEs, Really, very @ The Smell – Fantastic lineup at The Smell tonight with appearances from Agent Ribbons and VOICEsVOICEs – two of my favorite acts around. VOICEsVOICEs will play at combined set with Really, very at 9PM sharp!

The Ting Tings, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head @ Club Nokia – The Ting Tings never disappoint. Who could forget their sing along at Coachella this year?

The Ting Tings – We Walk

Bowerbirds, Megafun @ Spaceland – Bowerbird’s new album Upper Air came out last month on Dead Oceans.

Club Ding-a-ling @ Hyperion Tavern – Awesome night thrown by Nora Keyes & Don Bolles at one of my favorite spots in LA.

Reservoir Soup: Local Music Scene Update!

Manhattan Murder Mystery uploaded new tracks to their myspace page over the weekend. So far I’m really digging what I’m hearing. The band will celebrate their EP release at pehrspace on Aug. 22nd.

Great Northern will play a benefit show for the Pablove Foundation at The Bootleg Theater on August 13th. We love the Pablove Foundation so much here at Rock Insider. Please take a moment and donate whatever you can to the cause.

The Parson Red Heads are heading to the east coast in October and have picked up a bunch of dates with Roadside Graves.

[MP3] Crystal Antlers – Andrew

Mika Miko are playing both Sunset Junction and FYF Fest this year. I love that even on the Sunset Junction posters their name is misspelled “Mica Miko.”

[MP3] Mika Miko - I Got A Lot (New New New)

Signals will play their first show ever at Spaceland on August 14th with Shellshag. Although I’m sure whether or not it’s the “first show ever” is up for debate among certain circles. Get over it people.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: Ferraby Lionheart, Timonium, Priscilla Ahn

[JAX PICK] Ferraby Lionheart @ Hotel Cafe

There are very few band’s that can say they’ve been obsessively featured on Rock InsiderFerraby Lionheart is most certainly among those.

Ferraby Lionheart will be playing at The Hotel Cafe tonight at 11pm. This is the first time Ferraby has played in Los Angeles in a very very long time.

The troubadour with a voice like butter used to call LA home but has since moved on taking residence in Tennessee to focus on writing and recording his new record. I haven’t seen him live in almost 2 years so I am excited as hell to see him tonight!!!

Check out an oldie but a goodie “Crack In Time” below!

Best Tour T-Shirt I Have Ever Seen….

This is quite possibly the best tour t-shirt idea I have ever seen! No Age, Deerhunter, and Dan Deacon are going on a tour of true bromance proportions playing together seemlessly in Round Robin fasion. They’re calling the tour “No Deachunter” and even made this absolutely hilarious shirt for the tour (which speaks for itself) designed by Lovefoxx of CSS.

Read all the details over at Pitchfork.

Tonight In Los Angeles: Chief, Michael Runion, Deerhoof, Horse The Band, Mason Proper, Stellastar

Chief (Santa Monica, CA)

[MP3] Chief – Stealing
[MP3] Michael Runion – ‘Til We Have To

Chief, Michael Runion, Mini Mansions @ Bootleg Theatre

Chief are on Domino recording and their tracks have recent perked up my senses. Hard to believe they have been hiding right here in plain site. Guess I don’t pay much attention to music from the West Side these days.

My friend Ditte also sent along some music for Michael Runion and I’ve been playing it all day long. Very good new wave inspired tunes. “Til We Have To” is a total smash if you ask me. Download it above.

Mini Mansions will be heading out on tour with Autolux this fall. This definitely seems like the kind of show that people will be talking about for years to come as the “I was there first” show.

Horse the Band, Upsilon Acrux, All Leather
@ Eagle Rock Center For The Arts – Presented by Sean Carlson. I saw Horse The Band play at Chain Reaction back in 2004. Pioneers of the nintendo-core movement. They also played a ton of shows with my ex’s metalcore band. Yes, I dated a guy In a metalcore band. Ive also dated my fair share of men in skinny jeans.

Deerhoof, Busdriver, Avocet @ The Echoplex – Deerhoof are back!

Anavan, Dazzler
@ The Echo – Club Underground – Early show. I saw Anavan open for Monotonix at Spaceland a few months ago and they were absolutely fabulous!

Stellastarr*, Wild Light, Mason Proper @ Troubadour – Mason Proper’s first show in Los Angeles ever. You may remember we featured them on Rock Insider back in 2006.

***You can also download “Sun Hands” for free when you sign up for the band’s mailing list below!

We here at Rock Insider have been huge fans of Local Natives for – gosh…EVER. Back when the band was still called Cavil At Rest we featured them numerous times and even as far back as 2005 these guys were playing nights we threw at The Key Club (YES, The Key Club).

Local Natives will set up shop at Spaceland every Monday night in August. It’s sure to be a sold out, claustrophobic, sweaty good time – if you can get in. The band has been blowing up across the pond – securing a spot on NME’s Rader Tour in the UK, opening for Peter, Bjorn & John in Paris, and is rumored to be latching down a record deal over there very soon.

Catch video of their BBC1 Radio Session below and be sure to see them in August!
