Monolith Early Bird Tickets On Sale Now

Most people who know me well know of my severe aversion to large crowds. I have had full blown panic attacks on crowded nights at Spaceland forcing me to leave early. This pyshosis stems from being nearly crushed at one of my first big concerts ever. I now make it a point to note where all the exits are the second I walk into a venue and always stand at the edge of the crowd so if something does happen there’s no more than 2 steps between me and freedom.

This makes large music festivals a truly hellish and mentally trying experience for me. I have been avoiding the Coachella and Bonnaroo‘s of the world for years now.

This year I am finally breaking my streak because I have found the festival for me – The Monolith Music Festival in Denver, CO. The event will go down Friday September 12th – 13th, 2009 in one of the most scenic venues in the U.S. at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Reasons I’ve Decided To Go:

  • The confirmed lineup for the festival reads like my iTUNES playlist.
  • Red Rocks Amphitheatre is one of the most beautiful venues in the U.S. and has lot of space. Chances are I’ll be able to find places where I won’t get that “stampede” feeling
  • Price. Early bird tickets went on sale yesterday and are only $75 for a two day pass. This includes parking and has no hidden fees.
  • Great representation of bands from Southern California including Spindrift, Avi Buffalo, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes, HEALTH, and Miniature Tigers.
  • Bigger bands are still to be announced.

Frank Turner – Love Ire & Song Free Album Download

Frank Turner (United Kingdom)

My friend Jason turned me on to Frank Turner a few weeks back. I apologize for not bringing you his amazing tunes singer. The voice is clear and direct and his songs at the core sound sound like Irish folk tunes mixed with the energy and fervor of clearly rooted in punk. The songs have message, melody, and a rawness that I find deliciously awesome.

His new album Love, Ire, and Song is available for COMPLETELY FREE DOWNLOAD. You can get the whole thing at the link below!

VIDEO: Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes

I really don’t have much to say about Animal Collective‘s new video for “Summertime Clothes.” While I think Merriweather Post Pavilion is a good album I don’t understand the hype and fervor behind it. Still enjoy!

Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange

[MP3] Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange

I finally downloaded the entirety of Deerhunter‘s new Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP over the weekend and have been listening to it nonstop. The Georgia four piece continue to put out one solid shoegaze/psychedelic rock meets punk offering after another. It also helps that vocalist Bradford Cox voice just exudes charisma.

You can download “Rainwater Cassette Exchange” – the EP’s trippy title track above. Purchase the whole EP over at EMUSIC.

The band are current touring abroad but will return to the west coast August 29th performing live at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA. Single day passes go on sale next Sunday. Thank god. There’s no way I could afford those 3 day passes.

Division Day Sign To Dangerbird + Announce New Record

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Division Day. They have been an important part of the Rock Insider extended family for years now and have the clear distinction of being official Rock Insider “Homies For Life.”

The band have been hard at work recording their follow up to Beartrap Island with producer Justin Meldal Johnson.

The band announced yesterday that they have since signed to Dangerbird Records and will be releasing their new full length, Visitation, on August 18th. Two new tracks are available for streaming on the bands myspace page and whoa nelly are they different and absolutely fucking awesome. “Devil Light” is my overwhelming favorite.

Visitation is a departure from Beartrap and takes the band in a more intense direction. From what I’ve been told of the record expect lots of amazing reverb, noise, tape effects, and really interesting production.

One can only hope the band will play a show in Los Angeles soonish.

Read over at Buzz Bands.

Video: Band Of Skulls – I Know What I Am

I Know What I Am

OK so Band Of Skulls are totally growing me. Maybe its the fact that their bass player is hot as hell and can sing and their songs are comprised of really solid classic rock.

Check out their video for “I Know What I Am” above. It’s basically a performance video but damn that’s what sells this band.

Video: The Transmissions – Over Saving Mountain

Long time Rock Insider favs The Transmissions unveiled a new video for their track “Over Saving Mountain” which was included on their Greater Imperfections EP released late last year.

The DIY mix-media wonderland created in this video is absolutely fabulous.

Side Project Mania: Discovery + Handsome Furs

[MP3] Discovery – Orange Shirt
[MP3] Discovery – Osaka Loop Line

Big thanks to The Tape for the heads up on Discovery – new side project of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot. I went to go see Clues (ex Unicorns and Arcade Fire) over the weekend and have come to realize that the incestuous nature of the indie music world can lead to some pretty great collaborations.

While I really am not a huge fan of either Vampire Weekend or Ra Ra Riot, Discovery is something that actually made my ears perk up. Their slightly twisted synth laced pop tunes are light-hearted and fun – just what a side project should be.

The band have an album coming out July 7th on XL Recordings (Vampire Weekend’s Label).

Speaking of side projects - The Monolators will be opening for Handsome Furs on Thursday at The Echoplex. Handsome Furs is a side project of Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade. We play at 8:30pm.

We will have a discount list for friends and family. If you would like to be on the list please send me and email with your full name by Thursday at Noon!!

Video: Chairlift – Bruises

Chairlift (Brooklyn, NY)

Chairlift unveiled a new video today for their single “Bruises.” You might recognize it as that “hand stand song” from that one iPOD Nano commercial. The song is definitely jingle worthy indie pop mixed with some classic 80s new wave beats.

Amnion "Better Days" Remix Contest!

Amnion (Photo By Jeff Koga)

I completely missed the boat on Amnion last year. In the past few months their debut album AmenamO has been in regular rotation as I work at my desk in the office. The band are now hosting a remix “contest” for their new single “Better Days” which will be unveiled via the band’s Band Camp account next week.

It isn’t actually a “contest” since anyone who re-mixes the song wins, but regardless they’re excited about you participating. I’ll be doing my own lil JAX dj remix for the project. Watch out! Instructions on how to “enter” below.

Amnion and protege’s Avi Buffalo will be doing a residency every Tuesday in August at The Bootleg Theatre. This is certainly going to be a residency not to miss!

Re-mix the song “Better Day” then email your MP3 creation to the band

The band will upload it to there Myspace Music Player.

(((You may need to send us an introductory email before you send the mp3 so you avoid getting lost in our junk mail folder)))

This Tuesday, June 9 we’re releasing the single of our version of “Better Day” for download at amnion.bandcamp.com and we’re excited to hear what y’all come up with!

Re-mix it ambient, noise, gabba, crunk, backwards, whatever….no matter how convoluted and insane your re-mix is we’ll upload it as long as you haven’t added any offensive lyrics or material outside of the Creative Commons license.

VIDEO: Wavves Freakout At Primavera Sound Festival In Spain

Wavves (San Diego, CA)

[MP3] Wavves – So Bored

You’ve no doubt read about Wavves singer Nathan Williams’ on-stage meltdown at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona last week. Quite honestly I really feel bad about the whole situation. It can happen to the best of us. Freaking out in front of thousands of festival goers and Pitchfork owner Ryan Schreiber wasn’t the greatest idea but undertsanding the events that led to the situation brings up a bigger debate about the nature of the current industry – especially the indie world.

Nathan later apologized for the incident citing mixing drugs and bad decision making as the culprit. It now appears the band has also canceled the rest of the dates on the European Tour which is probably for the best.

We all deal with pressure in different ways and in today’s music climate – especially in the indie world, I feel there is an unfair expectation for artists to deliver consistently amid grueling touring schedules or else face a quick and swift death by the press. A lot of indie acts also lack the control and guidance that can come from having a great management team looking out for their best interests. Personal vices become a way of dealing with the stress and sometimes can get out of control. I’ve witnessed it first hand more times than I can count.

Some advice to the touring acts of the world: Make sure you are taking care of yourself on the road. You are not invincible and need downtime. Exercise moderation and try and set some ground rules for basic health such as getting good sleep, eating healthy, and cutting back on alcohol consumption.

Video of the band’s performance at Primavera has now surfaced on YouTube. You can watch it below.

Pehrspace Shut Down News – PLEASE READ

Monolators at Pehrspace 5/29/09 (photo by LA-Underground)

Pehrspace is hands down my favorite space in Los Angeles to see a show. The space is barely larger than a living room but has been home to many of the best underground bands in LA for over 3 years now. This weekend marked the first time Pehrspace has ever been shut down for a noise compaint and the space is now in danger is being shut down for good. Please read below:

Hi Everyone,

pehrspace has been receiving noise complaints from neighbors these past few weeks and Officer Ford (via Eric Garcetti’s office) visited us last Friday to give us a very polite, but stern, warning about controlling our sound levels for our shows. With the addition of L’Keg to the neighborhood (we welcome the company!), our neighbors are experiencing a new wave of sound intrusion into their homes and extra people in the streets so their patience is probably wearing as thin as it did when we first opened three years ago.

pehrspace experienced our first police shutdown this past weekend (sorry Officer Ford) and, a few weeks back, one of our promoters received a complaint directly from a neighbor during one of our weekday shows. As a result, we will be relocating all of our weekday shows to other spaces with the same DIY mindset and outside promoters will no longer be able to host events at the space unless one of us directly associated with pehrspace is present that particular night. This will take effect immediately and last until our neighborhood status is in good standing once again. Sean Carnage has received several offers to relocate his Monday night show. He will be at Women (1852 Crenshaw Blvd.) tonight.

We will continue to host shows and events on Fridays and Saturdays with heightened awareness for noise levels in the parking lot and within the space. Recently, both L’Keg and pehrspace have been working with Eric Garcetti’s office to obtain permits for future (and sorta exciting) big events so we are asking our contacts at the office how to ameliorate our neighbors’ view of the spaces. Just ONE more noise complaint can shut us down.

Officer Ford has noted and appreciated our efforts to soundproof pehrspace and it works really well, but absolute soundproofing isn’t effective when our doors are left open or if the music is unusually loud during a performance. We have also been pretty laidback about parking lot/outside noise and this may have added to our neighbors’ annoyance.

Please, if you or your friends attend any shows at both venues, be aware of your noise levels when walking through the neighborhood and when you’re outside of our spaces. It’s simple, respect our neighbors. If you notice any wild behavior, let us know and we’ll take care of the situation. We really enjoy the spirit of our events and the community that we’ve built together throughout the years–it would be a shame to have to stop because of those few who lack awareness and respect for others.

p.s. please spread the word. thank you.
