Andrew Bird U.S. Summer Tour!

[MP3] Andrew Bird – Oh No

Andrew Bird just announced more dates on his upcoming U.S. Tour including July 10th at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles!

I had the pleasure of checking out Andrew Bird at SXSW this year and I must say before seeing him live I wasn’t especially a fan of his music (the whistling annoyed me). Live its a different story. His voice is like crystal and seeing him outdoors at the Greek will certainly be a memorable experience. Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster.

Is It Chilly Outside?

We Listen For You raised the question first:

What the ‘eff is up with all these nude music videos featuring people streaking in public? First Matt & Kim for “Lessons Learned” and Now Make The Girl Dance’s video for “BABY BABY BABY.” It seems like everyone in blipster dance party circuit is dropping trow as a means of opening their music to a new audience.

Guess what folks. It ain’t a new tactic.

What’s next? Bling and Candy Girls in the next Mates of State video?

Video – Cass McCombs – Dreams Come True Girl (feat. Karen Black)

[MP3] Cass McCombs – Dreams Come True Girl (Feat. Karen Black)

I have been listening to Cass McCombs a lot lately – and by a lot I mean obsessively. I was given “Dropping The Writ” for the first time last month and since the record has become regular cruising music to and from work.

His lush and soothing voice just instantly puts me at ease evoking fantastic imagery. I feel like I’m sitting on a porch next to a lake in the mountains sipping tea when I hear his songs.

Cass McCombs will release a new album “Catacombs” on July 7th via Domino Records. “Dreams Come True Girl” is the first video to be unveiled for the release and features legendary Academy Award-nominated actress Karen Black. Her singing voice has also been featured in several movies including ‘Five Easy Pieces’ (1970) and ‘Nashville’ (1975).

The video was also filmed in it’s entirety at The Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA. I have a strange connection with that venue. Proof of it can be found tattooed behind my right ear. Next time you see me at a show come find me and I’ll show you ;)

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: Oh No Oh My + Django James & The Midnight Squires At The Echo

How’s this for last minute early bird show news. Django James & The Midnight Squires have been added to the Echo’s early bird show featuring Oh No Oh My! The show starts tonight at 7PM at The Echo.

Oh No Oh My‘s track “Walk In The Park” was one of my favorite songs a few years back and since then the band has proven they still have staying power.

Django James & The Midnight Squires have been making a lot of noise lately. The band was recently featured in Billboard magazine and has played a slew of shows in LA in recent months despite being based all over the world. I really can’t recommend this band enough.

Show starts EARLY AT 7PM and is ALL AGES.

The Valley Arena Are Dead.

[MP3] The Valley Arena – The Dig

[MP3] The Valley Arena – Grayscale

Long time Rock Insider favs The Valley Arena will be celebrating the release of their new 7″ EP + Digital LP “We Died” TONIGHT at Alex’s Bar in the hometown of Long Beach! The album is available today on our very own JAXART Records.

My love of The Valley Arena‘s unique blend of melodic post-punk goes back to my teenage years. The band even played at my 21st birthday party at The Key Club! With this album the band has definately focused their energy steering more into a structured format while leaving hints of their frantic energy and angular guitar riffs always just under the surface. The Long Beach District has a fabulous write up on the record which I recommend you read for a non biased opinion.

The “We Died” 7 Inch comes with 2 tracks “Bait & Switch” & “Grayscale” and includes an exclusive B. Side remix of “SOS4XOX” by Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta and Free Moral Agents. The full 10 track album is included with the 7 Inch as a digital download. You can purchase it now in the JAXART Store.

You can listen to new tracks over on The Valley Arena’s Myspace Page

James Yuill – Turning Water Down For Air

James Yuill (London, UK)

[MP3] James Yuill – Left Handed Girl

See now I have always been a fan of downtempo, folk, and electronic music. I think the large majority of posts on this site from 2005-2007 consisted of these three themes. While more recently I’ve been indulging in my punk roots I still have a soft spot for solid hooks and classy production. I’ve found both in James Yuill new album Turning Water Down For Air. The album hits stores next week. “Left Handed Girl” is a fantastic track that begins sounding like a Postal Service song but has the amazing ability to win you over by the first chorus. The rest of the album is richly diverse and entertaining from start to finish.

James Yuill will play the Glasshouse in Pomona TONIGHT with M83. You can catch him again next Friday May 29th at The Troubadour with School Of Seven Bells and Black Moth Super Rainbow.

VIDEO: Eagle & Talon – Ice Life

Eagle & Talon (Los Angeles, CA)

Eagle And Talon just unveiled a new video for “Ice Life” off their debut album Thracian. The quirky video was directed by Max Goldblatt (Obi Best, MGMT) and takes a page from the impromptu living room dance parties I used to throw when I was nine.

Eagle And Talon were also in a recent episode of 90210. You can watch that video right here.

Lucero, Black Joe Lewis, Graham Forest At Alex’s Bar Tonight

Lucero (Memphis, TN)

Lucero will be performing in Southern California tonight and tomorrow. Tonight’s show is down at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach and will feature Graham Forest (check him out on Videothing.com), and Black Joe Lewis.

Lucero were recently featured as part of MTV’s “$5 Cover” soundtrack. Singer Ben Nichols actually plays a character on the show.

$5 Cover is a new MTV series comes from the creator of Hustle and Flow and is set in the Memphis music scene. It looks intriguing but I’d definately have to see the series before I could make You can watch a teaser for the series right here or below.

New Mika Miko – We Be Xuxa

Mika Miko (Los Angeles, CA)

[MP3] Mika Miko – I Got A Lot (New New New). – NEW TRACK!

I’m behind on a lot of things these days. Apologies friends and family. Hopefully things will be dying down in the next little bit.

In the meantime enjoy this new jam from Mika Miko. The band’s classic proto-punk is perfect for summer! There is to no end how much I love this band.

Mika Miko celebrated the release of their new album “We Be Xuxa” at The Smell last Saturday. I was out of town and I’m sad I missed it!

The band will be heading out on tour this June with Rock Insider favs The Strange Boys. Be sure to pick up “We Be Xuxa” direct from Post Present Medium’s online store.

Avi Buffalo + Faraway Places Tonight At The Echo

Avi Buffalo Residency At The Echo Continues TONIGHT!

[MP3] Avi Buffalo – What’s It In For?

Long Beach phenoms Avi Buffalo‘s all ages residency at The Echo continues tonight with performances from Marvelous Toy, The Starburst Crystal Ensemble and The Faraway Places. I will repeat - YOU MUST SEE THIS BAND.

The Faraway Places
will also be celebrating the release of their fantastic new album “Out Of The Rain, The Thunder, & The Lightning. Pick up the latest issue of LA Record at the door tonight at the show to read my review of their new album! You can stream the entire thing right here.

[MP3] The Faraway Places – The Sun Goes West

Mandatory Listening: Gumshoe – Here Comes The Sun

Gumshoe (Los Angeles, CA)

[MP3] Gumshoe – Here Comes The Sun
[MP3] Gumshoe – Honestly

Gumshoe has been hiding right under your nose. I’m fully convinced that this girl is destined to join the ranks of Santogold and M.I.A.

The project is fronted by the fabulous miss Devon Montgomery – who lends her vocal chops and insane sense of style to the eclectic and deliciously experimental musical offering.

The tunes range from classic R&B & Hip Hop to folktronica and includes elements of electro, new jack swing, african, noise, psychedelic and experimental rock. The music is held together with classic sounding drum machine beats and Casio worthy synths while Devon’s breezy confidence and a fantastic charisma take center stage.

Since seeing Gumshoe live at Echo Curio last week I have been enamored with their track “Here Comes The Sun.” the insanely catchy tune sounds like what would have if Outkast collaborated with Animal Collective. Even on a lo-fi CD-R demo this track’s strength shines through. It’s an absolute jam.

The live show is still developing – but even with just an ipod and a couple of back up dancers it’s undeniable that Gumshoe has legs and is going somewhere.

LA Readers can catch them live this Saturday May 16th at The Hollywood Canteen.
