Video: Phoenix – Lisztomania

Phoenix unveiled a new video today for “Lisztomania” their first single off their forthcoming album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix which is scheduled to drop in the stated May 26th. I must say this song makes me nostalgic for their first album…

In “Lisztomania” the band traverse the grounds of what looks to be a museum holding a hot air balloon with the name of their album. They then step in side to do what they do best..

Check out the video below!

Crystal Castles Throw Temper Tantrum In Dallas?

Gorilla Vs Bear has some highly entertaining insight into Crystal Castles show last night at the Granada Theatre in Dallas, TX that was finally canceled at 10pm after hundreds of kids had already lined up for the show. This is a serious case of he said she said but honestly I’ve artists pull this kind of shit before [READ MORE]

This Weekend In Awesomeness…

Soooooooooo glad it’s FRIDAY! A lot of fun stuff going on this weekend. Leonard Cohen will be performing at Club Nokia for two special nights, Monotonix and The Mae Shi will destroy (and I do mean DESTROY) Spaceland TONIGHT with Anavan opening, and The Happy Hollows, Devon Williams, Kill Kill Kill, VOICEsVOICEs, and Meho Plaza will lend their hand at The Regent Theatre performing as part of KXLU’s Fundrazor.

I will be taking it easy, doing a bit of recording, and venturing out on Saturday to see VICES from the UK performing at On The Rox.

The band is in Los Angeles this week all the way from Reading, England and will be playing two sets at 10pm & 12am. Great rock n’ roll band you wont want to miss. They will also be performing at HELL YA! next Wednesday April 15th at The Viper Room with Jonneine Zapata (Read Bronson’s post about her here), The Epilogues, Ezra Reich, and Sabrosa Purr.

Phoenix On SNL…

[MP3] Phoenix – 1901 – NEW TRACK!

I watched Phoenix performing on SNL last week in the Dakota Lounge before The Monolators set. Did any one else want to give the singer a sandwich as much as I did? He looked so incredibly gaunt!

The band’s new album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix will be out May 25th, 2009. Seriously these guys look like their starving so please pick it up!

Watch their performance on SNL below. Thanks HULU!

Video Premieres: Silversun PIckups "Panic Switch" + The Voyeurs "The Night I I Died"

Silversun Pickups (Los Angeles, CA)

LA local legends Silversun Pickups unveiled their new video for “Panic Switch” today on MTVu.com. The dark and brooding video features the band doing what they do best – rocking the fuck out and setting the mood. Y’all want to know why I started playing a Thunderbird bass? Look no further the Silversun bassist Nikki Monninger’s absolutely gorgeous white thunderstick. I saw that puppy back in 2005 and there was no going back.

Silversun Pickups will be performing at the glasshouse in Pomona on April 12th as well as Coachella next weekend.

Up and coming east side duo The Voyeurs also released their first video today for “The Night I Died.” The colorful and whimsical video was shot in Highland Park (anyone else recognize the ALH?) and was done all in one take – backwards and forwards. The video also marks the first video by photographer Benjamin Hoste – whose work was recently featured in the Exposure exhibit alongside fellow shutterbugs Jeff Koga and Simon Cardoza. Watch the video below!

Their debut album Well Known Drag is available now on iTUNES.

Robert Francis + The Parson Red Heads TONIGHT at The Troubadour

Robert Francis (Los Angeles, CA)

21 yr old songwriter Robert Francis has been compared to Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Townes Van Zandt in the past. With comparisons like that it’s easy to get lost in the hype. That could easily be the case but anyone who has seen Robert live knows that the buzz is warranted and the comparisons nearly spot on. ROBERT FRANCIS IS THE REAL DEAL.

His recent residency at The Echo brought out a star studded audience and featured some notable guest appearances from the likes of Pete Yorn. TONIGHT Robert Francis will headline the Troubadour – his first show since entering the studio with producer Dave Sardy (Oasis, Jet, OKGO) to record his Atlantic Records debut.

Robert will be performing new songs and showing Los Angeles exactly why he’s one of the most exciting new artists to come out of this city in a long time. Download “Little Girl” off his first LP below. Robert was also recently featured in a full 30 minute episode of Last Call with Carson Daly. Head over to Robert’s myspace page to check the video out!

The Parson Red Heads (Los Angeles, CA)

Opening for Robert at the Troubadour tonight are The Parson Red Heads – who will be releasing a new 7 Inch/EP entitled “Orangufang” on our very own JAXART Records on April 28th!

The release includes three brand new tracks and marks the first time The Parson Red Heads‘ music has ever been available on vinyl. You can pre-order the 7-Inch now in our JAXART Online Store. Only 200 copies are available – each album cover is hand screened printed and made with love. They are going unbelievably quick so make sure you pre-order today to reserve your copy! Video: Crystal Antlers – Andrew

Crystal Antlers (Long Beach, CA)

[MP3] Crystal Antlers – Andrew

Crystal Antlers are set to release their highly anticipated debut LP Tentacles next week on the now reorganized Touch and Go Records. The album was released digitally about a month ago but vinyl fanatics and CD heads (Do those even still exist?) can purchase the CD and LP this upcoming Tuesday. The band totally had some of those fabulous LPs for sale at their show at the Orpheum last Friday.

Crystal Antlers also unveiled a new video today for “Andrew” filmed by Videothing.com‘s Michael Reich. Watch it below or head over to Videothing.com and watch the video there. The Antlers will play their CD release show on April 16th at the Eagle Rock Center For The Arts – one of my favorite spots to see shows in Los Angeles.

The band will be heading out on a US Tour immediately following their release show including a handful of dates up the coast with Cold War Kids.

Be sure to order Tentacles in the Touch and Go store.

The Strange Boys…And Girls Club

The Strange Boys (Austin, TX)

[MP3] The Strange Boys – Heard You Want To Beat Me Up
[MP3] The Strange Boys – To Turn a Tune or Two

The Strange Boys have been among my favorites for the past year. I spent much of SXSW last year stalking them with a certain red headed maven of the Silverlake scene and even saw them play in the back of a speedboat in Long Beach Harbor.

Well it’s been an eventful few days. My ankle sprain actually turned out to be a broken ankle. Getting that puppy casted and set today so get your sharpies ready!!!

I’m no longer playing bass with Spider Problem – don’t want to divulge anything more than things ran their course. You should still go and check them out at CIA in North Hollywood on Friday with Werewolves from New York City. Werewolves are absolutely fabulous and some of the coolest cats around. Listen to their tunes here.

Taking the rest of the week off from blogging. I’ve been burnt out for a while and needed a break – just didn’t know it would be a literal break.

Lost In Texas…Well Somewhere In New Mexico At Least

As you can tell from the absolute lack of posting last week I have been lost in the vortex known as Austin TX for the better part of the week. A huge SXSW recap post coming up.

In the mean time I’m on the road riding back to Los Angeles with Spider Problem. So far it’s been an eventful trip. I smacked Shayne in the face with my bass at a show and gave her a pretty amazing black eye and today I stepped funny out of the van and completely twisted my ankle. Still limping and it’s 5 shades of purple and blue. At this rate we’re pretty sure one of the van crew is going to be coming home in a full body cast.

We’re stopped in Albuquerque New Mexico tonight for a show at the Atomic Cantina with Werewolves, Hot Panda, and Pink Snowflakes.

Back in Los Angeles on Wednesday! In the meantime follow me on twitter or add Spider Problem to get the most recent info of what we’re up to!

Rock Insider’s Survival Guide To SXSW 2009

I’m freaking out. SXSW is just 2 days away and I am absolutely not prepared. I decided to write up a quick survival guide for those heading out to Tejas this week. This will be my 6th straight year attending the festival. Learn from my mistakes and come prepared!!

Day Pack
You will no doubt be on the go all day long and all night. It’s best to pack a day bag where you can grab items on the fly and have a place to store all the free samplers and swag you’ll get at events. Below is a list of things you should pack:

I lost my driver’s license my first year at SXSW and it was a nightmare trying to get home. Pack two forms of ID in separate bags. Passport and Driver’s License works.

Business Cards
Music industry professionals from all across the globe to SXSW in the hopes of networking with other professionals. Don’t miss out. Bring at least 50-100 business cards to pass out to people.

Computer Bag
I would die without my laptop at SXSW. Bring a padded laptop case because it will get josled around. If you have a white of black macbook pre 2007 be especially careful. All it takes is one gnarly spill and you can nick your hard drive rendering your precious laptop and giant paperweight.

Party Schedule
A lot of people are trying new fangled iPhone apps and schedules to plan their rounds in Austin. SXSW Sched is the best I’ve seen so far. Still, it’s always good to have a backup. Be sure to print out a master list of all the events you would like to attend plus contact information.

If there’s a party that requires an RSVP make sure your print out your confirmation and bring it to the event just in case your rsvp gets lost in the shuffle.

Any veteran of SXSW knows that when you’re constantly going all day and all night YOURE GOING TO GET SICK. Start the day off right with a heavy dose of Airborne to try and combat the blahs the best you can.

Comfy Shoes
You will spend the majority of the day walking and if you’ve ever tried to hail a cab at sxsw at 2am you know you’re better off walking back to your hotel. Save yourself the pain of having a huge open blipster by wearing your most confortable pair of shoes.

So far the weather forecast calls for temps in the high 70s and 80s with nightly lows in the 50s to low 60s. Normally you don’t need a large coat in Austin in March but it does get hot in the day and cold at night. Best solution – Wear layers. I usually do a tank top, light weight long sleeve shirt and a hoodie. Lightweight scarves can also do wonders.

You get a lot of flyers, business cards, and free stuff at SXSW. Having your own lanyard really comes in handy – especially if you’re doing SXSW this year sans badge.

Scalp burns are the worst. Bring a hat

Don’t be stupid. Pack earplugs. It’s loud. Even on the street and ringing in the ears is the worst.

Cure-all for aches pains, headaches, hangovers.

Blisters, cuts from scaling fences at exclusive parties, run ins with Pedi-taxis. Bring band-aids just in case

Throat Coat

I’ve been to SXSW 6 times and every single year I lose my voice by Friday. You’re constantly talking over loud music – even on the street. Save yourself the pain by bringing some Throat Coat tea and remember to drink PLENTY of water. I know FREE BOOZE flows down 6th street but you have to take care of yourself. Forgo the morning coffee and try tea instead.

Chaser Tablets
They never seem to work well with me but if you feel inclined be sure to pick up. There’s nothing worse than a raging hangover at SXSW.

Extra Undies

If you wind up crashing in a hotel room with a large group of people things are bound to go missing – especially the small stuff. Bring extra undies, socks, bras, etc.

Eye Care
I don’t know what it is about Austin in March but my eyes always are fire. Pick up a bottle of Refresh tears. Whatever you do STAY AWAY FROM VISINE. It makes it worse.

Contact Care

If you wear contacts be sure to pack your glasses, some travel solution, contact case, and extra lenses. My 2nd year at SXSW I forgot to bring extras and had a lens tear on day 1. I spent the rest of the trip 1 eyed.

Bring Sunglasses and get a sturdy case for them. You’ll probably have a lot of stuff in your day pack so things are bound to get broken. Make sure they block UVA rays

Sun Protection
It may be March but you can still get burned! Most day parties are on outside patios and you’ll spend a long time walking outside in the sun. Pack some sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. I really like Neutrogena’s sun stick. No mess and doesn’t mess with your skin.

Extra Cell Phone Charger

I somehow manage to lose my cell charger every year at SXSW. Pack an extra just in case. Make sure you charge it every night at the festival as well because usually every socket is in use in Austin with people powering laptops and charging phones on the fly.

Sleeping Bag
Hotels are usually booked months in advance and for a few of you that means sharing a single hotel room with 8 people. Bring a sleeping bag. Easier to pack and saves a lot of space in the van.

Bag for Receipts
Whether you’re going for work, to perform, or to look for a job SAVE EVERY RECEIPT. I like to bring a small change purse and every night I put the receipts for the day in a little plastic bag. When I get back to LA I immediately file them. Makes a huge difference come tax time.

Go Travel Size
Airport security are horrible when it comes to liquid restrictions. Save yourself the hassle of having to buy new face wash by packing a travel kit.

Memo Pad/Pens
Be sure to carry and memo pad and pens to write down info. Sometimes its easier than a smart phone.

Do I really need to explain myself here?

Cough Drops
Will save your life come Day Three

Happy Birthday Mouse!!!

I am so unbelievably bummed that I cannot attend Mouse’s big 27th bday bash at pehrspace TONIGHT. I will be here working instead. Sigh.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go. Starts at 9pm. The secret surprise guest? I think it’s no secret at this point that it’s The Mae Shi. ZOMG!THERE’S FREE CAKE TOO!

SXSW Preview: Iglu & Hartly + My Jerusalem

SXSW is descending upon us and with less than a week to go before the music portion of the festival begins people are scrambling to make last minute plans, assemble their party lists, and print up a mountain of business cards.

With all the major artists infiltrating the once new artist driven fest it’s easy for the smaller acts to get lost in the chaotic hustle and bustle. That’s why for the next 5 days I will bringing you a few good artists YOU MUST check out while in Austin.

My Jerusalem

First things first new music from the newly formed My Jerusalem – the latest indie rock super group. I found out about this band because it includes the lovely miss Ashley Dzerigian formerly of Great Northern. Easily one of my favorite female bass players ever. The day she “left” Great Northern was seriously a HUGE BUMMER.

Completing the lineup are guitarist Dave Rosser (of Twilight Singers), drummer Cully Symington (formally of Bishop Allen), and front man Jeff Klein – who is a solo artist and touring member of Twilight Singers.

[MP3] My Jerusalem – Sweet Chariot

My Jerusalem have some pretty solid indie pop tunes filled with strings, horns, raw vocals, and delicious swells. “Sweet Chariot” is an absolutely fabulous song. I can see them being a must see for any “in the know” blogger and A&R rep attending the festival this year (All 5 of you who are left at least!).

has a great interview with project up on his site. Click here to check it out.

From DoneWaiting.com

Iglu & Hartly (Los Angeles, CA)

Second on the list – L.A. locals Iglu & Hartly. The band brought the party to many a Hell Ya! event back in the day but since achieving UK success, being added to KROQ, and signing with Mercury Records the band have moved on to bigger and better pastures. They are damn entertaining and shouldn’t be missed. Their new album “And Then Boom” is out May 5th.

Mandatory Listening: STAB CITY

Stab City (Los Angeles, CA)

It’s been a long ass time since I’ve seen a band live that just ABSOLUTELY FLOORED ME. Last year it was Crystal Antlers and Avi Buffalo. The year before The Henry Clay People. Last night I witnessed what is assuredly one of the most pulse pounding raw live bands I have seen in a long time – STAB CITY.

The band is doing a free residency every Wednesday this month at Old Town Pub in Pasadena. I caught their set just before Mike Watt & The Missingmen hit the stage (they did NOT disappoint. ONE BIT. MAN IS A LEGEND). They sped through every fabulous song at break neck speed and put one helluva show.

Head over to STAB CITY‘s myspace page and listen to “The Psychic” and “VU Vulture.” Seriously. YOU NEED TO SEE THIS BAND LIVE NOW

Robert Francis On Last Call With Carson Daly

Last week Last Call with Carson Daly did a tour around Los Angeles doing special 30 minute episodes entirely dedicated to an up and coming artist. On Thursday Carson dedicated an entire episode to Echo Park’s own Robert Francis. At one point he even compares Robert to Bob Dylan and Neil Young!

The piece includes 3 amazing performances all filmed on location at The Hotel Cafe on Feb 24th as well as an interview with Robert. All I can say in response is DAMN this kid is going to be a star.

[MP3] Robert Francis – Little Girl

Robert Francis enters the studio this week to record his Atlantic Record debut. Be sure to catch him live at the Troubadour on April 2nd with The Parson Red Heads and HAIM. Tickets are on sale now.
