3 Of Clubs Aftermath…

Man I’m pooped today. Last night I played my second show on bass for Spider Problem and let’s just say it was a beautiful disaster.

Death To Anders and The Sleepover Disaster also performed and were fabulous. Not even two bars into Spider Problem‘s first song my borrowed amp went on the fritz and starting cutting in an out. At first I thought it was the cables or my pedals but even after plugging in direct the amp still was going haywire. Pair that with not knowing the songs that well, a really dark room, and guitar tech problems and you had a chaotic train wreck. Still, it was a lot of fun. My next show with Spider Problem is March 11th at The Old Towne Pub in Pasadena with Stab City and Mike Watt!

Coupla’ things going on around LA TONIGHT: Neko Case will play a free in store at Amoeba at 7pm, Avi Buffalo and Princeton are at The Rumble at 3 of Clubs. See you out and about tonight?

Battlehooch (San Francisco, CA)

What’s up happy people – and you thought I disappeared off the face of the planet…Well if you can’t find me here you can always follow me on Twitter.

Just wanted to check in with you and share some righteous new tunes from San Francisco’s Battlehooch. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with these fine young gentlemen before and seriously they are fucking wild. Think two parts Mike Patton, One part Man Man, One part Queen, and a whole lot of horns, drums, clarinet, and anything not nailed to the floor. It’s their impromptu euphoric vibe I find so appealing. Download “The Special Place” below.

The band will be playing Southern California very soon. If you can hook em up with a show hit em up on their myspace page.

Album Of The Week: Neko Case – Middle Cyclone

[MP3] Neko Case – Middle Cyclone

News of Neko Case‘s new record Middle Cyclone has been circulating the blogs for months but I have remained mum until the time at which you could actually purchase the record yourself. Ladies and gentlemen – That day has come.

It’s been three years since the release of Fox Confessor Brings The Flood and if you ask me Middle Cyclone couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I’d like to officially go on record as saying the album is one of the most beautiful collection of songs I’ve heard in the longest time.

Great Northern – Remind Me Where The Light Is

Great Northern (Los Angeles, CA)

We haven’t heard much from Great Northern until recently. After spending much of 2007 touring with the likes of Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids and Ladytron off their debut album “Trading Twilight For Daylight” the band seemingly disappeared off the map to work on their follow up. They recently resurfaced as a duo and unveiled plans for their new album – “Remind Me Where The Light Is” which will be released April 28th on Eenie Meenie Records.

“Houses” the first single off the record is more fuzz laden and driving than the majority of their first album – which was firmly rooted in the dreamy pop and gorgeous guitar swells. Great Northern seem to have found their edge. I am excited to hear the rest of the record.

The band will be doing a small tour in March and plan to unveil new music at SXSW this year. LA Readers can catch them in what is assuredly going to be a clausterphobia inducing performance at the Silverlake Lounge on March 16th.

Download “Houses” Below and be sure to check ouut their new e-card.

VIDEO: Princeton – The Waves

Princeton‘s new video for “The Waves” is kind of the most adorable thing ever. Directed by Alexander Klein the short pieces was based on the Greek myth of Andromeda, and shot on Super 8mm. I’ve tried my hand at Super 8 in the past and let me just say shooting on Super 8 ain’t cheap or easy. Princeton have done a marvelous job with this piece.

Princeton will also be touring on their way to SXSW, including dates with Cut off Your Hands, Jeremy Jay, Sebastien Grainger and Fight Bite. Video, dates and mp3 can be found below.

Touch And Go To Close Distribution Arm

I heard murmurings of this recently but Pitchfork finally confirmed it. Touch And Go – Home to Long Beach local boys and Rock Insider favs Crystal Antlers is shutting down its distribution arm and will cease releasing new records. Touch And Go distribute Drag City, Kill Rock Stars, and Merge to name a few. Crystal Antlers forthcoming full length debut entitled Tentacles will still be released on April 7th but will be one of the labels final releases. The label hopes to one day be able to release new music again.

I’ve also heard unconfirmed reports that the labels staff has been laid off.

Statement from Corey Rusk, Touch & Go Founder:
“It is with great sadness that we are reporting some major changes here at Touch and Go Records. Many of you may not be aware, but for nearly 2 decades, Touch and Go has provided manufacturing and distribution services for a select yet diverse group of other important independent record labels. Titles from these other labels populate the shelves of our warehouse alongside the titles on our own two labels, Touch and Go Records, and Quarterstick Records.

“Unfortunately, as much as we love all of these labels, the current state of the economy has reached the point where we can no longer afford to continue this lesser known, yet important part of Touch and Go’s operations. Over the years, these labels have become part of our family, and it pains us to see them go. We wish them all the very best and we will be doing everything we can to help make the transition as easy as possible.

“Touch and Go will be returning to its roots and focusing solely on being an independent record label. We’ll be busy for a few months working closely with the departing labels and scaling our company to an appropriate smaller size after their departure. It is the end of a grand chapter in Touch and Go’s history, but we also know that good things can come from new beginnings.”

Aside from being a great label, Touch and Go distribution has always been a perfect fit for other labels as they deal directly with retail stores in both the U.S. and Canada. The full list of labels that would be left looking for a new distribution home by this closure include:

21361
5, Rue Christine
All Natural
Atavistic
Drag City
Emperor Jones
Estrus
Flameshovel
Jade Tree
In The Fishtank
Kill Rock Stars
Le Tigre Recordings
Merge Records

Welcome Back! Meet Liona + Local Update

I hope everyone had a lovely Valentines/President’s Day weekend. I fell off the map for a few days in an attempt to rest up for the crazy week ahead. That and I had a new addition to the Rock Insider family:

Everyone meet Liona – the cutest damn cat you will ever see. She was a stray that had been hanging around my building for over a month. My landlord took her in when it started raining but her other cats weren’t getting along with her. She is seriously the sweetest kitty ever!

Quick local update for you:

Tonight The Monolators will unveil a new lineup at Echo Curio with The Karabal Nightlife and The Shivers from New York City. In addition to playing a new cover song, The Monolators will be busting out some classic Mono Tunes. Tickets are $5 and the show is all ages.

The Henry Clay People
have their first tour diary in over at Buzz Bands. Head over and check it out

Rademacher have also been sending in updates from the road. You can read their diary over at Web In Front.

I ventured out to see Le Switch, The Minor Canon, and The Breakups last night. Le Switch were freaking ON in a huge way. The new songs are pretty amazing. The Minor Canon also played a strong set. It’s been a while since I had seen them live but once a fan always a fan.

Pizza! have declared war on The Smashing Pumpkins and just posted up a new song call “Hyundai Commercial.” Yes. You heard me correctly. Find out what the hell I’m talking about right here. They also have new T-Shirts which are kind of a “must buy” because they super-ceed the awesome quotient by eleventy-million. The band will be playing at Echo Curio on Feb 28th with Fol Chen and Big Whup.

Radio Free Silverlake has two really stellar shows coming up!

Valentine’s Day… Meh + Dark Was The Night Listening Party

I really have never been a fan of Valentine’s Day and I’m especially not a fan of it since it’s also the date my grandfather Joe Carrol Clifford passed away. It will be 3 years this year.

I always celebrate “Papa Joe Day” with a nice cold Dr. Pepper, Nat King Cole, and a bowl of Jambalaya.

This Sunday though there looks to be a pretty rad event being hosted by The Fader, In Sound, and The Beggars. I think I might check this out:

Don’t miss your chance to preview the newest release from Beggars/4AD – Dark Was The Night.

Seriously What the hell is Joaquin Phoenix on? If this is method acting he’s doing one of the worst Devandra Banhart impersonations I’ve ever seen.

Video: Exitmusic – Here Sunset

Exitmusic (Los Angeles, CA)

Check out Exitmusic‘s new video for “Here Sunset.” Technically the video was shot a while ago but the band finally was able to finish editing it.

It’s been far too long since I’ve seen these guys live. The band are playing two benefit shows in next couple of weeks including VoicesVoices tour benefit at The Smell on Feb 22nd. More details on that later!

From Devon and Aleksa:

“Come see our new video for ‘here’s sunset’ (actually a pretty old video that we finally got around to editing, DIY style. notice, if you will, the exquisitely executed animated sequences. pixar will no doubt be banging down the door.
)
we shot most of it at Aleksa’s birthday party a couple years ago. we love it.
