The Meeting Of The Mormons in Highland Park TONIGHT

Most people don’t know this but when Rock Insider first launched in 2005 it was originally called Hollywood Mormon Girl. That was until the church sent me letter asking me to take it down. Only mention to the blog that still exists is this one on Music For Robots.

TONIGHT there will be a gathering in Zion aka The American Legion Hall in Highland Park as The Monolators ring in the new year with dear friends The Mormons, Seasons, Spider Problem, and Megalosaurus. The shindig is presented by IsGoodMusic.com.

You are encouraged to bring your wives. There will also be a book of mormon check at the door and short break for relief society and elder’s quorum.

Admission is only $3! You cant even get a latte that cheap anymore!

Please obey the Word of Widsom at tonight’s show by not drinking. or smoking. or doing drugs unless their anti-depressants. and avoid the bacon wrapped hot dog guy – you’re supposed to meat sparingly.

Happy New Year everyone! Spaceland was the place to be this week with the finale of The Movies residency on Monday and The Henry Clay People taking over New Year’s Eve last night.

Congratulations to Henry Clay People‘s bassist Noah Green who proposed to his girlfriend Natalie on stage at midnight at last night’s big Spaceland show. SHE SAID “YES!” Last night was also Noah and Eric’s last show with the band for a while. Big news coming in the next few days!

Enjoy these fabulous photos of The Movies and Everest courtesy of photographer Benjamin Hoste.

Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard Announce Engagement!

Congratulations to Death Cab For Cutie front man Ben Gibbard and actress/songstress Zooey Deschanel. The couple who have been dating for over a year decided to make it official and got engaged just before Christmas.

They seriously have to be one of the cutest looking couples I’ve seen in a long time. No word on a date just yet.

Read more about their engagement at US Weekly.

Rock Insider’s Top 10 Albums Of 2008

I almost didn’t compile this list. This year was spent focusing on other projects and less about listen to new music. Still I felt compelled to finalize this list as a way to bring closure to this blog for 2008. On a personal level this year sucked

Obviously I’m biased towards the 3 albums I released on JAXART Records this year as well as The Monolators full length LP Don’t Dance – on which I played bass and keys. Therefore I’ve decided to omit all of my projects from my end of the year list. That doesn’t mean they weren’t amazing!!

Please if you have a second – check out the JAXART vinyl store and purchase a record or two. I need to reduce inventory by Jan 1st!!!

Otherwise enjoy my list below!!!

Video: Fujiya & Miyagi: Sore Thumb

Fujiya & Miyagi: (Brighton, UK)

Fujiya & Miyagi unveiled their new video for “Sore Thumb” this week on Pitchfork TV. It made me fabulously dizzy just watching it.

The track is off their new album Lightbulb that was released in September. Their down-tempo inspired indie rock tunes are the kind of tracks you’d expect to listen while shopping at the latest shops on Robertston Blvd. Simple elegance and style seems to be this act’s forte.

Fujiya & Miyagi also announced dates for their upcoming U.S. Tour. Be sure to check them out when they hit the Echoplex on Mar 3rd!

April March and Steve Hanft – Magic Monsters

April March and Steve Hanft (Los Angeles, CA/New York, NY)

[MP3] April March and Steve Hanft – Flashback Pt II

There is something innocently Parisian about April March’s delicate voice and ingenious song writing. Maybe that’s why her resume reads like a “Who Who’s Of American Cinematic Pop.”

April March has collaborated with the likes of Brian Wilson, Ronnie Spector, and Jonathan Richman. Her numbers have been the soundtrack to films by Quentin Tarrentino and Gus Van Sant.

If that wasn’t enough to give you a mega-crush on this songstress how ’bout her early career as an illustrator working with Spider Man creator Steve Ditko, and as an animator for Ren and Stimpy and Pee Wee’s Playhouse. I know at least one blogger who’s ears just perked up.

For her latest project March teamed up with Steve Hanft (A film and commercial director by day, musician by night) to release a delightful collection of classic pop. This record is as diverse and intriguing as the parties involved.

You can pick up April March and Steve Hanft‘s new album Magic Monsters on 180 gram vinyl now in Martyrs of Pop’s eShop.

VOICEsVOICEs – Sounds Outside EP

VOICEsVOICEs (Los Angeles, CA)

[MP3] VOICEsVOICEs – Tape Noon

I received VOICEsVOICEs new Sounds Outside EP album earlier this month and must admit I knew nothing about the band. No less than 10 seconds into the two piece’s warm ambient tracks filled with delicious drone and ethereal chanting I fell MADLY in love. Their music is largely instrumental with vocals hovering barely over a whisper and siren-like guitars taking the lead. “Tape Noon” (posted below) made the hairs on my arm prickle up. God I live for that.

In my research for this post I also discovered that both Nico and Jenean of VOICEsVOICEs put in LOOOONG hours volunteering for the “No On Prop 8″ campaign. It’s so refreshing to see a band who is about more than just their own success. They even hosted a “Repeal Prop 8″ benefit show at The Smell earlier this month that raised money for Courage Campaign and Equality California.

With so many experimental ambient bands popping out of the Smell scene right now it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle (See Caldera Lakes, Pocahaunted – BOTH AWESOME). I feel VOICEsVOICEs are truly unique and destined for great things.

The band will be departing on a self-booked West Coast tour this February presented by Manimal Vinyl.

Los Angeles readers can see VOICEsVOICEs this Friday at The Smell with alas alak alaska, fancie, & Y/Yamas de Mysticos.

You can pick up their new EP Sounds Outside on CD baby.

The Browns – For The Saints

The Browns (Brooklyn, NY)

I must say I am royally digging all the Bob Dylan inspired rock n roll bands that are cropping up across the country. First the fabulous Strange Boys and now The Browns from Brooklyn are taking the roots of rock and making it their own.

The Browns will be playing three shows around New York and Phili with The Soft Pack formerly known as The Muslims in January. The Browns are also part of the 1928 Recordings family who released The Muslims first EP.

Death To Anders Wish You A Very Merry Christmas

I really think this number and artwork speaks for itself (themselves? grammar police please help me). Death To Anders are evil in the best possible way. I frickin’ love you guys.

High Hats – The Montpellier Sessions

High Hats (Borås, Västra Götalands län Sweden)

I don’t know why but I’m really digging this song today. I think it could be the sing-a-long worthy “Lalalalalalalaaaaaaaaaaas.” High Hats hail from Sweden and list themselves as “Pop Punk” – which I usually avoid like the plague. This is certainly NOT Blink182 chaps. This is fabulous throwback rock n’ roll with jangly fervor.

You can download their entire 5 Song EP – The Montpellier Sessions for free on their myspace page. My only criticism is that it’s entirely too short. I’ve already had to listen to it 8 times this morning – which is definitely not a bad thing! The Montpellier Sessions EP is out now on Alley Cat Records.

Team Love Introduces The Library

Team Love have been offering their albums for free on their site for year’s now. Now it’s time for the next step and what i think is a completely RAD idea. Today Team Love launched The Library. Simply register for the service and you will be treated to complete album downloads, exclusive content, and live tracks from Team Love artists. ALL FOR FREE. Read more below.

When Team Love started we had the simple and possibly self-defeating notion that posting all our albums on the website as free downloads would be a good detour around the wreckage of the music industry and a way to avoid getting bogged down in the number one topic of discussion and distraction: piracy, illegal downloads, P2P networks and so on.

Five years later and the debate still drones in the background, and while some bands have adopted a mutated version of the “free download” (pay what you wish, etc), we’ve decided to reshape out policy in a different direction and introduce the Team Love Library. Each month (or so) we’ll be rotating the Library’s selections, featuring different Team Love albums as well as exclusive content such as unreleased songs, live or remixed versions of TL favorites.

The library will be open to the public 24/7, and as we have an endless abundance of MP3’s (we fucked up and made too many of them), anything you take from the library is yours to keep. You will not be notified if you fail to return something on time, and you will not lose your library privileges if you share selections with friends.

Justice (Paris, France)

Rock Insider is teaming up with Cornerstone Promotion to give away not 1 or 2 but TEN copies of Justice‘s new tour documentary and live album “A Cross the Universe on CD/DVD. The release is in stores TODAY.

The documentary was filmed during the duo’s spring 2007 tour and if you’ve seen it you know how fucking amazing it is. I don’t want to spoil it anything for you. Just know there’s a gun-toting tour manager, bus driver with the lowest vocal range you’ve ever heard, lots of debauchery with drunken indie-leaning socialites, and even a wedding in Vegas swimming with American Apparel clad blipsters. Trust me  – YOU HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT.

TO ENTER: send your full name and mailing address to jax@rockinsider.com SUBJECT LINE: JUSTICE DVD GIVEAWAY

The album/documentary combo is also available digitally through iTUNES. Puck it up right here.

I went to the west coast premiere at the  Nike Sportswear event space at the Montalban Theatre in Hollywood on Halloween. The Fader crew were there as well and filmed a great piece on the event. Watch it right here. Also check out an exclusive interview with Justice about the Documentary over at Shockhound.com.
