VIDEO: Deerhoof – Basket Ball Get Your Groove Back

Deerhoof (San Francisco, CA)

Just the other day I was running errands and felt the need to bust out The Runners Four. I must say I love Deerhoof‘s early experimental music but their new more pop focused tunes are just magnificent.

The band released their new video for “Basket Ball Get Your Groove Back” today. The track is off their new album Offend Maggie which is out now via Kill Rock Stars. I thought it would be damn near impossible for Deerhoof to top last years’ Friend Opportunity which was easily one of my favorite albums of 2007. Offend Maggie certainly rises to the occasion.

The Monolators Residency Week One Videos

Cupcake The Bear Loves You!

Thanks to Miss Elaine Layabout Week 1 of The Monolators Residency at pehrspace is now available to view! The entire set is posted below.

Classical Geek Theatre broke the news yesterday that Spaceland Productions is asking Elaine to take down all her videos of local acts shot inside their venues which include Spacelad, The Echo, and The Echoplex. Read the post here. This really makes me upset.

Elaine’s videos are shot with a simple still camera and while the video is not high quality it means the WORLD to bands around Los Angeles. She provides a service and a great deal of free promotion to the venues. She does not make any money off her videos so I honestly don’t see what the harm in leaving these up when hundreds of cell phones videos from shows make their way onto the web everyday.

Starting today all her videos from the venues will be taken down. This will include footage from pretty much every local band in Los Angeles including footage from residencies for bands like Death To Anders, Rademacher, Mezzanine Owls, The PIty Party, Radars To The Sky, and CD release shows for Henry Clay People, and even The Monolators.

Spaceland as a public cry if you don’t want people to shoot inside your venue without approval from now I’m fine with that. But PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE don’t make Elaine take her videos down.

If this bothers you as much as it bothers me please speak up and let youre voice be heard.

Week Two: Rejection Inevitably Followed by Tears (2005-2006)

For our second week we examine the remainder of the Rejection strata and the metamorphosis of the trio format into a simple duo, resulting (among other things) in the document entitled Our Tears Have Wings. Whereas live performances of this epoch were strictly confined to drums and guitar, the historically-correct studio presence of von Bogdon is once again represented by the Marquis himself in live setting, and the gracious, post-contemporaneous contributions of Sir Dennis and Dr. Jex are faithfully depicted.

Of especial note is the aesthetic preference of the age for artifacts of outer space exploration, and the resulting (and uncharacteristically lengthy) dirge “Let’s Be Best Friends In Space” will be unearthed, although sadly without the accompaniment of a 350-member children’s choir as originally intended. The ensemble is also pleased to present the spirited holiday ode “Santa Claus Versus Dave Matthews.”

Prop 8 Protesters March On The Mormon Temple

Protesters basically shut down Santa Monica Blvd yesterday creating a traffic nightmare to march on the Mormon Temple and Santa Monica and Overland. LDS church members at the urging of their leadership donated an estimated $20 Million Dollars to the “Say Yes On 8″ Campaign.” More protest rallies are planned for this weekend including a giant one at Sunset Junction on Saturday.

Simon Says No! – Sleeping Heart

Simon Says No! (Oslo, Norway)

I make no secret that I was once a Refused loving post punk and hardcore kid growing up in Salt Lake City. It’s actually something I consider a badge of honor. So when a few days ago my good friend Dany sent me music from Oslo, Norway’s Simon Says No! and listed Refused as an influence my ears perked up.

The band recently made U.S. landfall at the CMJ Music Marathon and were met with rave reviews. With their epic psychedelic rock and soaring fuzz driven guitars I really don’t see how that’s not possible.

Upon first listen people could easily classify Simon Says No! as a shoegaze band. They would definitely fit well with the My Bloody Valentines of the world. There sound is definitely a lot more angular than the traditional powerhouses of the shoegaze era. This slightly left of center approach is what I think appeals to me most.

Download “Sleeping Heart” below and added to your latest “Across The Pond” mix. This is a definitely a band to watch in 2009. Be sure to catch them at SXSW next year.

BONUS: Classic Refused video for “New Noise” video posted below. CAN I SCREAM!!!!! Former Refused singer Dennis Lyxzén’s new band The (International) Noise Conspiracy will be playing at El Cid on Nov 12th and are playing 3 shows in Los Angeles next week. Be sure to catch at least one.

Music Industry Minute: Sponsored Download Widget

The Vacation (Los Angeles, CA)

I’m all for ingenious ways to sell and promote music online. Which is why when I received an e-mail stating that The Vacation had teamed up with Playboy to give away their new album for free my ears more than perked up.

Last Thursday The Vacation released a widget in partnership with Playboy that allows users to download their new full length album Get Used for FREE.

This widget is powered by TrueAnthem, but there are a lot of companies launching based on a similar premise. My favorite to pop up thus far is TopSpin. Check out what they’ve done with Jubilee. There is also of course RCRD LBL which provides an online destination for free downloads but they haven’t quite grasped the in-widget download quite yet.

So let’s focus on the general idea – The “Sponsored Download Widget.” The upside to marketers – Well first off, YOU GET PAID by your sponsor (Ca-Ching!). In some cases they also allow you to collect user information, up sell ringtones, tickets to shows, and pretty much whatever you want.

For the user all you’re asked is to sign up for a service and give up your first name, e-mail address, and birth date to receive your free MP3s.

Now back to The Vacation free download. The downsides? You can only download the tracks individually – which is a pain in the neck but hey FREE doesn’t necessarily mean EASY. There are also audio messages from the band throughout the album (Poor Steve) mentioning that Playboy is the sponsor.

[MP3] The Vacation – Shit Talker

As for quality – 128 kbps isnt exactly stereo sound but for my MP3 player it’ll do.

I know it’s free but the fact that I have to go in and use Garageband to cut out the message before I can use it in a podcast or DJ set just irritates me. Most users won’t even know how do that. I also like 320 kbps or higher for my DJ sets and would rather not spend 10 minutes trying to download when I have cable internet.

I guess that’s what their counting on when the record is available in stores and for digital download on traditional services later on. If I want virgin tracks at a high bit rate I should expect to pay a premium. Beggars can’t be choosers right? Well for a band like RADIOHEAD that would be true, but this is a developing act! If you want to get the music out there you got to make it as easy as possible to access!

I love the idea of the sponsored download widget as a way for bands to offer up their records for free while still making a bit of money – especially if the sponsor makes sense. If you’ve ever seen The Vacation live you would know that PLAYBOY is damn near the perfect sponsor for them.

However, I think adding audio messages before the music plays and keeping the quality of the MP3 low is unnecessary and will ultimately lead to dissatisfaction among end users – You know those pesky individuals usually referred to as THE FANS.

Get Used is destined to become a total guilty pleasure. The album is the epitome of the Sunset Strip and is actually fabulously trashy, but the audio messages leave it coming off as cheap and commercial – which actually when I think about is kind of genius. This whole campaign is deliciously overdone. For The Vacation – i works. I’d love to see the same campaign done with Beirut – Somehow I don’t think it would have the same effect.

All in all I think the technolgy is progressive and could be one of several key solutions to the ever changing role of music in the digital space. There will always be those who buy music from iTUNES, or buy CDs in stores. Hell, there are people out there who still buy strictly on cassette. This is a great solution for the right kind of band and could be adapted further in the future.

What do you guys think of the sponsored download widget?

Check it out below!

VIDEO – The Monolators – Take It Outside

Message from Eli via his Feed Us A Live Insect Blog

Nestled somewhere ‘twixt the Mezotonic Era, when spiders of terrible size and ferocity roamed the earth and carved out ocean bed and mountain range alike with their fiery breath, and the Present Time, wherein men and ladies of Science discovered the Secret of Electricity and the extra month after Christmas, lies the Age of the Monolator–when frail, sickly fops of terrible size and ferocity roamed the earth and carved out ocean bed and mountain range alike with their fiery breath. In this new, weekly exhibition, we attempt to uncover the true history of this little-known age, and reveal the civilizations and appurtenances that flourished therein.

Most scholars, barring a rogue and fanatic few, divide the chronology of the Monolators into four distinct dynasties, or epochs. We commence, therefore, at the beginning, and note that all dates, places, and musical depictions are strictly approximate.

Week One: Prehistory and Rejection (representing the years 2002-2004)

In this first exhibition, we review the dawn of the Era and the musical detritus remaining thereof. In this earliest incarnation the Monolators took a tri-fold form, with a standard drum and bass configuration (originally represented by Dr. Mary Chartkoff and her menial day laborer Eli respectively) augmented by the presence of an electric guitar, originally in the hands of the esteemed Sir Michael Dennis, whose performance tonight represents his first stage appearance in several years. [Editor's note: Although not technically correct in historical terms, for the purposes of enhanced fidelity we gladly note the presence of Dr. Ashley Jex and the Marquis Thomas von Bogdon on bass and electric guitar respectively. Dr. Mary will oversee the percussion ensemble while Eli will provide additional guitar chores and light caterwauling.] The major work of the period, Rejection Set Me Free, is broached, preceded by two minor compositions of slightly earlier vintage, the now almost totally obscure “Spandex Hitman” and “In My Dreams.”

Also of note for the week is the unique recreation of the popular hymn, “Take It Outside,” along with its beloved mascot, Cupcake The Bear. Cupcake will make a special appearance to assist in the celebration of birthday festivities for the Curator, Dr. Carnage. Light refreshments will be served.

HoneyHoney – "First Rodeo" LP

HoneyHoney (Venice, CA)

Now that I don’t have to commute out to Santa Monica everyday I can now take in early shows on the east side of town. This Tuesday, November 4th (Election Day!) HoneyHoney will celebrate the release of “First Rodeo” their latest full LP at Hotel Cafe with support from friends The Sweet Hurt and Miss Willie Brown.

“Little Toy Gun” the first single off the new album is a fantastic track with a desperado feel. Suzanne Santo’s vocals are the perfect marriage of cabaret, bluegrass, and soul. Definitely the highlight of the record for me.
