Club NME TONIGHT with The Pity Party, Film School, The Meeting Places

The PIty Party (Los Angeles, CA)

TONIGHT Club NME at Spaceland will host performances from The Pity Party, Film School, and The Meeting Places. The show is sure to be a glorious fuzz fest.

The Pity Party will be playing a slightly different set TONIGHT. Guitarist and vocalist M recently took a tumble off his bicycle and got pretty banged up including needing surgery to fix a broken finger. Read about it here. In his place members of Eskimohunter, The Human Value, and The Deadly Syndrome will lend their talents and liven up the night.

The Dears Sign To Dangerbird

The Dears (Montreal, Canada)

Back when I first started this blog I was absolutely obsessed with The Dears. They are both weird and classic at the same time. Some define their sound as Orchestral Indie Pop. I just think it sounds like a 60s pop station on barbiturates.  I even got to meet them up close and personal when Marjorie Fair and Shout Out Louds – both bands I worked with at the time were chosen to support them on tour.

The Dears new album is titled Missiles and will be released in the US on October 21st via Dangerbird Records.

PS. Dangerbird also released Darker My Love‘s new album 2 this week. The record really is amazing and I highly suggest picking it up on iTUNES today! Be sure to catch their CD Release show Thursday at The Troubadour with Tweak Bird, Amnion, and Eulogies.

Lord Jeff + New Dana Falconberry

Lord Jeff (Massachusetts)

Lord Jeff – fronted by the eccentric Sean Goggins and featuring a revolving cast of characters evoke a sense of mysticism and intrigue that will no doubt generate several unplaced comparisons to acts like the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Their tunes tend to be more somber and moody with a delicious sense of atmosphere and space.

The band will be doing a small tour of Los Angeles this week. This isn’t their first time in Los Angeles though. Lord Jeff played with Entrance and Mountain Party at Spaceland back in November of last year.  Catch them TONIGHT at the R Bar in Koreatown and Friday at L’Keg with Bats in the Belfry and Old Softy.

[MP3] Lord Jeff – Asleepwalking

ALSO WORTH CHECKING OUT:

Dana Falconberry (Austin, TX)

In anticipation of her latest full length offering Dana Falconberry will be releasing a series of animated shorts on her myspace page. Long time readers of this fair site may remember how much I love Dana’s distinct voice and captivating stage presence. The LP – Oh Skies of Grey  will be released Sept 30th via 2:59 Records

Check One..Two TONIGHT at The Scene with Castledoor, The Flying Tourbillon

THE scene returns to The SCENE TONIGHT with The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Castledoor, Gangi, Wirgo, and Pioneers! O Pioneers! performing a special show as part of Check One..Two. After the shake-up at the Viper Room the Indie 103 hosted night seemed to be uprooted. No official word yet n what the future of the night holds.

The lineup tonight is truly exceptional. The majority of the crowd will be there for Castledoor and the Tourbillon but do make it a point to head out early to catch Pioneers! O Pioneers! The Echo park based quartet fronted by Sha-Na Dahl play some amazing deconstructed pop tunes that I have really been digging a lot these days. Think Correatown but slightly more punk (PS. Correatown = TOTALLY PUNK ROCK).

IN OTHER NEWS:

Go download an exclusive track from Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene over at RCRD LBL. “Summer Time Dues” was apparently written and recorded on a rainy night last week in Toronto. You can actually here the rain in the background which adds a lot of texture and a percussive element to the otherwise stripped down track. Definitely worthy of mix tape addition.

[DOWNLOAD "SUMMER TIME DUE"]

POLVO (YES POLVO!!!!!!!) will be playing at The Echoplex on Sunday August 31st with Trans Am and The Drones. The isolated math rock obsessed teenager in me wills my attendance. you can buy tickets for $15 on ticketweb right now.

Introducing…The French Semester

The French Semester (Los Angeles, CA)

Allow me to be the first to proclaim that I am an absolute boob for not writing about The French Semester sooner. Their feel good throw back rock tunes seem like the perfect soundtrack to a summer night down at the beach.

I fell in love with their track “The East Man” which displays a perfect blend of pensive angst and classic indie rock tunes a la Cat Power and Modest Mouse. You can check it out on the band’s myspace page.

If you haven’t checked them out yet you can see the band this Saturday at Pehrspace with Ollie Byrd & The Trees, Guppies, and Young Animals.

The French Semester recently released a new EP – The Future Of Boxing and will be heading out on a short West Coast tour in August playing everything from taverns to garages. Go see them when they play a town near you!

Your Weekend In Los Angeles: Sebastian Tellier, Darker My Love, Howlin Rain, Castledoor

Thank god it’s the weekend. I’ve had a pretty loaded and stressful week filled with series premieres, benefit shows, and a lot of expectation. Like I said THANK GOD its the weekend.

TONIGHT you have two great show options in Echo Park:

Darker My Love‘s bi-city residency continues with another FREE SHOW at The Echo with Fool’s Gold. Last week there was a line around the corner. If you can’t get in to the show I suggest you take a two minute walk up the street to Echo Curio for some BYOB action:

Young Animals will play with Cries and Whispers, The Next Of Kin, and Hotbodies. All four band are absolutely amazing. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see any of them yet I suggest you come out.

American Apparel Flea Market This Weekend!

I am pleased to say that the downtown warehouse summertime parking lot party scene is still in full effect. TOMORROW Parisian electro rocker Sebastian Tellier will be performing at the American Apparel Factory Flea Market.

Just imagine a giant pile of AA clothing at drastically discounted prices. Last year over 4,000 people attended the event and took home almost 200,000 garments.  This year promises a slip n’ slide, DJs, food and drink, a family bookstore, movie screenings, and a giant dance party after the sun goes down. You wont want to miss it. Get all the details about the event RIGHT HERE.

[MP3] Sebastian Tellier – Divine

After the dance party head to Spaceland to check out Crystal Antlers with Howlin Rain! Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

Introducing…Jail Weddings

Jail Weddings (Los Angeles, CA)

I have to say I hadn’t heard much about Jail Weddings before the band set up shop at The Echo this month for their Monday Night Free Residency. One things for sure – when I heard their music I was instantly starstruck.

It’s so refreshing to find a truly original band in Los Angeles. The 10 piece project play a blend of vintage pop, 60s surf, doo-wop, and old timey tunes that completely bring you out of yourself and into simpler times. At the same time their tunes display a bit of edge and rock n’ roll glam very reminiscent of the punk heyday with bands like The Cramps and The Screamers leading the charge. There’s something almost defiant about the sound – which I find soooo incredible appealing.

You can pick up Jail Weddings 7″ Vinyl Single (Y’all KNOW how much I stinkin’ love vinyl)  at shows or online at GreaterLosAngeles.net.

Also head over to LARecord.com and read a detailed interview with the band and download their Residency Mixtape. The mix has everything from John Coltrane to the Screamers. Pretty bad ass.

The lineup for next week’s residency night at The Echo is especially stellar with The Moon Upstairs, Thee Makeout Party, and Weave! all performing.
